Atari Brings Retro Gaming Action To Your iOS Device

Aching for some Missile Command Action? Atari has you covered and then some with its new iOS offering, Atari’s Greatest Hits. Retro gaming fans will be in heaven with this one, as Atari’s Greatest Hits includes such classics as Pong, Asteroids, Missile Command, and Centipede. Save your quarters; no need to hit up the arcade anymore!

This game features more nostalgia inside than you know what to do with. 100 classic games are offered, available in packs of 3 for a .99 in-app purchase or for $14.99 for all 100. Both arcade games and Atari 2600 console games are included, and the app even includes a grayscale option which takes you back to the days of black-and-white TVs.

When you open up the game you are taken to a virtual “lobby,” a throwback to when people actually played video games in arcades. You can look through the games in several different views including by category, by cover, or even with a 3D rotating display of arcade machines. The interface looks nice, is responsive, and makes it easy to find and buy the game that you’re looking for.

Overall, Atari’s Greatest Hits is an excellent way to get your nostalgia fix, but there are a few problems, especially on the iPhone. In most iOS games the controls are transparent, appearing on top of the game in a way that doesn’t obstruct important parts of the game. In Greatest Hits, however, the controls have their own area of the screen, which makes the actual display area for the game much too small. This problem doesn’t exist on an iPad, however, where the larger screen more than makes up for it.

Atari’s Greatest Hits is a free download and comes with one free game (Pong) built in. With the cheap price of additional games, this seems like a must-have for any retro gaming fan. With Atari’s Greatest Hits and the iCade iPad Arcade Cabinet, it’s like you’re in the ’80s all over again.
