Damn Small Linux

Users of slow, old and annoying machines running operating systems like Windows 98 at 89% of the hard drive is full of junk, a brilliant version of Linux called Damn Small Linux is here to help.

The whole operating system, comes packaged and under 50MB. Yes, Linux in 50MB. No wonder it’s damn small. Very creative name to it’s creators by the way.

Damn Small Linux (or DSL for short) comes without some of the useless pre-installed aps that you never use, and it comes without some of the more spacey aps. However, you do have the choice to download Firefox, Thunderbird or Open Office and keep the file limit under 50MB.

50MB is the very strict limit for DSL, and the exact file size is 48.63MB. Google it to download it.

If you have tried Damn Small Linux, or you are convinced to now, let me know what you think, what you think of Linux in general, or anything else you want to say related to this topic, leave me a comment by replying to this post. You will either need an account at Lockergnome, or to give your Name and E-mail Address.

This seems like an interesting alternative for a lot of small business users (and others!) that manage a lot of information, as well as for those that don’t have a lot of need for advanced features on some of the “heavier” operating systems. I think it’s really important that there are many options out there for small businesses and others that need to create more efficiency in their lives. I know I advise computer consultants working with companies to really search for options that are best for each specific client’s business and not just what might be the “latest and greatest” or the most popular, so this seems like it would be worth looking into (maybe not for everyone, but for those with pretty specialized needs).

Have used this one…as well as Puppy Linux from Australia. Both are designed for the same audience…while Puppy does have downloads about twice the size of DSL. Both are good at what they do…but I have found Puppy much more configurable & usable.

DSL is a great distribution - I use it on an incredibly old laptop, a Compaq LTE with a 75MHz 486 and 16MB of RAM. It won’t run in GUI mode on that sort of machine, but text mode is perfectly fine for me.

I have used DSL some times and admire the amount of programs within that size. I use only Windows PCs so I loaded QEMU which emulates a PC (virtual machine) and so I have another PC on my PC (completely freeware) with a footprint of 50 MB!
