Minitower Or Not?

About six years ago I purchased an Advent minitower which was going to be my main desktop computer. It was OK for a while, but then things started to get ugly.
Firstly, I could not add anything to it. I ended up, when I installed graphic or sound cards, to leave the cover of the side of the computer so that the hardware could fit in it. It then started to turn it’s self off when doing tasks that need a lot of speed and efficiency, like playing games. It needed to be cooled down so I did not know if the fan inside was damaged or what but I had to put a fan next to it, and it was very noisy.
So last year I purchased a Dell Dimension 3100 Desktop, and I have had no major problems with it so far.
What have your experiences been with minitowers? Do you have a minitower or are you hoping to purchase one sometime soon. Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment.

If your system would turn off when playing games or anything like that and the fact that you added another sound/video card the problem sounds more like you needed a better power supply. This can make a huge difference and is one of the most common things that are over looked.

Very subjective topic. I have both mini and full size cases. The mini cases are fine if you don’t plan on adding a lot to them. but if your building a super gaming machine, get all the case you can. My primary web surfing computer that a good friend of mine was kind enough to build up for me is in a microfly case.

It stays cool, is extremely quit and makes for a good all round computer.

My parents bought a Dell Minitower, and I hate it, if only because of how often I have to fix it. They, like you, have heating problems, which, IMO, are related to the tiny enclosure with all those heat-generating components inside. I think the minitower concept would be fine for some applications, but as a main workhorse, no way.
