Today the .asia address has been officially released, and businesses and home Web sites can get a Web domain that ends in .asia.
The address is thought to be obtained by thousands across the Internet, most of which based in Asia, but some in other countries wishing to promote their services or product to the Asian community.
Work started seven years ago to get the domain started, and since then The DotAsia Organisation have won approval to start making the domain name. This was in October 2006. Now, one year on, domains are starting to be made ending in .asia. It is currently only available to businesses and governments.
