Focus On The iPhone WeatherBug App In 2010

Posted by on Jan 4, 2010 | No Comments

Throughout the end of 2009, I have been receiving questions via Twitter and other means asking what is planned for the iPhone WeatherBug app in 2010. Push alerts, speed with updates, the works. Well today I wanted to share some of what WeatherBug has planned for this incredibly successful application and hopefully, it will also answer any questions you might have yourself.

  • Weather Stations on and off - There have been reports of some weather stations being up one day and down the next. While this might not appear to related to the iPhone app specifically, understand that the reports of this appeared about the same time the app started to really take off in popularity. What is happening? Because of the fact that each location is a little different, sometimes a station might appear to be down for a moment or two. If however, this is something you are seeing on a regular basis, there may be a network interruption. This is worth reporting to WeatherBug immediately if you can explain the times and dates you are seeing this happen. Best bet is to just email me personally at mhartley (at) weatherbug.com and I will get this to the right people.
  • Weather update speed – Imagine having you home network going from two connected computers to thousands of connected computers. That is a very rough example of what WeatherBug experienced with the WeatherBug for iPhone applications throughout 2009. They found themselves in a massive usage explosion…which has been awesome, but has also meant that the pipeline from user to weather data needs to be expanded. So for those of you who have found sometimes you are not getting the app to update right away, try it a second time and realize this is temporary – WeatherBug is making expanding the pipeline to your phone a TOP priority in 2010.
  • Where are those Push Alerts? – This is the number one question I get on a daily basis. Hopefully my Twitter followers will find this news that makes their day. Push for WeatherBug is coming early this year. The reason why the date is not set in stone is that WeatherBug wants to make absolutely sure that this system is working as advertised. You can expect this sometime around March.

The great thing about the iPhone app in general is that when we release the update addressing any of the above, you will find it automatically available from App Store updates. It’s just that easy.

For those of you interested in checking out the WeatherBug iPhone app, we have two to choose from. The free ad supported version simply called WeatherBug. And the second one called WeatherBug Elite. Both of these apps are available today from the App Store on your iPhone.
