Toy Bot Diaries: Entry 1 Review

Toy Bot Diaries is the one of the few iPhone games that just get it. What I mean by that is the game plays to the iPhone/iPod Touches strengths and doesn’t force an awkward control scheme on you. This game was built from the ground up to be an iPhone game and not a port like many other titles out there. For only $3.99 this is the kind of game that is worth every penny.

The controls in the game use a great mix of tilt and multi-touch and just feels just right. You tilt the screen left or right to move the character in that direction. Your character also caries a grappling hook and you have magnetic boots. You can tap metal to shoot your hook at it and hold down to shimmy up to it. By tapping the character you enable the magnetic boots which allows you to carry items. While there can be some frustrating times with the control scheme for the most part it works very well.

The game is a mix of an action adventure game that features very good puzzles. Like with the game Portal the puzzles can get pretty tough but they are never so hard that they are impossible to figure out. The levels are also very long and thankfully there plenty of save points in the game because in some cases it will take a few tries to figure out a puzzle. Once you get the hang of the game its an absolute joy to play and trying levels over again offers unlimited gameplay.

The graphics are 2-D and look very well. The animations are solid and there appears to be no issues with frame rate or anything of that nature. The sound is very subtle and helps with the gameplay, as you accomplish something you hear a noise that confirms you did something right. Unfortunately there is no back story or introduction into the game so you do feel kind of lost and confused as to why you are doing this.  On the other hand this is only part one in what developer IUGO says will be several chapters. This is great because of the episodic layout it is cheaper for gamers to get there hands on this title.

Overall this is the kind of game that we should all expect for the iPhone. It combines great controls with fantastic gameplay. If you are looking to buy only one game for the iPhone you cannot go wrong with this game. IUGO hit a home run with game and lets hope they can keep it up with future releases.
