THQ is one of the largest American video game companies and now they are one of the first large studios to release a game for the iPhone. Despite being scheduled for release later this year on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS De Blob has already been released for the iPhone.

De Blob is a simple game when it comes down to it. You are a blob that rolls around and a gloomy Grey city and your object is to add some color back to the city, while reaching the amount of points needed to advance to the next level. Inside each level there are some mini missions were you can race, paint a certain amount buildings in the allocated time , and some more of the same. Basically each level you are doing the same thing.
When you get a little farther in the game bad guys will start to show up and if you roll into them you will turn black and loose points. The way you attack this enemies is that when you are close to them you can press the bottom of the screen to jump on and destroy them. While this adds some level of difficulty the game is really a lot of the same, and is best played for a few minutes each day.

The graphics look nice, as you can tell by the screen shot above. Of course the game doesn’t look as well as its Wii counterpoint but the game does hold up well on its own. The colors really make the game come alive. It really does feel like an achievement to paint the entire city and give it life again. My only complaint is that the color brown is used a lot, why not use something brighter?

The controls are what makes this game a real winner. You can use tilt controls, that you can calibrate, or you can use swip controls to move the blob. Both feel tight and responsive and for an added bonus you can use both at the same time. This makes rolling even faster and even more fun.
Overall De Blob is a great game for the iPhone and really shows how well games can be on the device. The graphics are pretty, the sounds are decent, and the gameplay is tight. If you are thinking about buying De Blob you won’t be making a mistake, THQ hit a home run here with its first iPhone title.
