“What is Linux?

Well you will deftly have heard of windows and probably heard of Mac OS X as well. Windows and Mac OS X are both operating systems (OS) they are what turn your computer from a useless brick to a wonderful tool. So what is Linux then? Linux is a anther operating system it is based on something called the Linux kernel (Windows and Mac OS X both use kernels as well). Linux is gently free and open source but there are some commercial distros (ill talk about distros later) such as Red Hat Enterprise and Suse Linux Enterprise.

Distros:

What is a distro? Distro is short hand for Linux distribution. It is a collection of the Linux kernel and hundreds of different packages, desktop environment (for example gnome) and applications. there are many distros for example Ubuntu, openSUSE and Linux mint . basically a distro is an OS in its own right. There are hundreds of distros but the most commonly used are Ubuntu, PcLinuxOS, openSUSE, Kbuntu, Mandriva, Fedora and Linux mint.

Ubuntu is one of the best distros for beginners out there (i think its the best). It is based on Debian so it uses .deb package so it can use most of Debian package and there are 1000s of Ubuntu apps that also use .deb. It uses the gnome desktop environment so it is good fro people who are used to windows. I recommend Ubuntu for any one wanting to try Linux and for x windows users (i mean if you used Windows XP etc)

Kbuntu is fantastic if you what a KDE desktop and want the same fell and reliability of Ubuntu. it is exactly the same as Ubuntu except it uses KDE and has a lot of KDE apps included. I would recommend Kbuntu for users of Mac OS X or someone looking for a very graphical desktop

Desktop Environments:

What is a desktop environment? A desktop environment is what you see wen you login in (it is very hard to explain basically it sits on top of the kernel) Here is an example of a gnome desktop

There are 2 main desktop environments for Linux Gnome and KDE (short for K Desktop Environment. There are many lesser none desktop environments such as Xfce and Enlightenment

Gnome is my personal favorite because i used to use windows as my only OS before ester 2007 (i know i am still a Linux newby but that’s life) so i like gnome because it is a lot like windows in some senses. Gnome is 10 years old as of 2007 and has had 2 major versos gnome 1.0 and gnome 2.0 so a lot of the bugs have been worked out. Gnome is one of the most customizable desktop environments out there even more so then KDE. If you are an x windows user or just what to play with Linux i recommend you start with gnome

KDE is more for if you are a user of Windows Or mac OS X or an other operating system user it can be used by basically any one its is not tired down to one type of user but many. KDE is 12 years old and has gone threw 3 major versions at the time of writing ( in 9 days KDE 4.0 is going to be released so i will probably up date this post) KDE 1.0 KDE 2.0 KDE and KDE 3.0. KDE is less customizable then Gnome (i cant remember why but i find my self keep hearing people saying that and i deftly notice it when i use KDE) I recommend you use KDE if you have used a mac or like the way your desktop looks

Xfce is more if you have an older system or just want a very fast system and if you what something a bit different then windows and Mac OS X . Xfce is 12 years and has gone threw 4 major versions 1.0 2.0 3.0 and 4.0. It can be highly customized (i am not shore how much because i haven’t played around with it that much). i recommend using Xfce if you have a old computer and not mind it not having many desktop effects (you can add some with compiz-fusion or with beryl but then you would need a computer with at lest 128mb ram and a supported graphics card).”

2.You never have to feel regret when all your friends have gone (you wont have fear that you might lose someone)

3.You will have loads of spear time (you can focus on something you love eg computers)

2. If you die you don’t have the worry of having to write a will, friends/ family/cat and who’s going to pay for the funeral (its the only think that popped it to the back of my mind)
