Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Signed by Douglas Adams

It’s true that you can find just about anything on eBay, and books penned and signed by Douglas Adams are no exception. Is it a coincidence that the “Douglas” part of his signature looks a lot like “hoopy?” Of course there are copies of all five books of the Hitchhiker’s trilogy (I know, I know), but also some Dirk Gently stuff and even his Last Chance to See (which you should see) adventures that document when he went out into remote areas to have a peek at critically endangered species before projected extinction.

If anyone could put a smile on such a bleak premise, it was Douglas Adams (though Stephen Fry, who continued with an updated version of the series, is another such rare talent).

Even if you’re not in a buying mood, it’s fun to take a browse through Douglas Adams books signed by the author. It’s like window shopping in a manner completely appropriate to Towel Week.

Our resident "Bob" (pictured here through the lens of photographer Jason DeFillippo) is in love with a woman who talks to animals. He has a fondness for belting out songs about seafaring and whiskey (arguably inappropriate in most social situations). He's arm-wrestled robots and won. He was born in a lighthouse on the storm-tossed shores of an island that has since been washed away and forgotten, so he's technically a citizen of nowhere. He's never killed in anger. He once underwent therapy for having an alien in his face, but he assures us that he's now feeling "much better." Fogarty also claims that he was once marooned along a tiny archipelago and survived for months using only his wits and a machete, but we find that a little hard to believe.
