Seagate GoFlex for Mac and PC External Hard Drive Giveaway

Posted by on Aug 8, 2011 | 47 Comments

The GoFlex series from Seagate offers a flexible external storage solution to both Mac and PC users with a multitude of different connection options available. For example, one Seagate GoFlex unit can connect with FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 ports with attachments available to connect via USB 3.0 and eSATA as well.

The drive runs on power provided by the bus you connect it to, requiring no additional power sources. Essentially, this means you can carry your drive with you in your pocket without any need to worry about a cumbersome power brick taking up space.

Each GoFlex drive is made up of two parts. The first part is a drive sitting within an enclosure. This drive can be either 5400 for standard editions or 7200 in the Pro version. The enclosure itself is fingerprint resistant so you don’t have to worry about very unattractive fingerprints covering it as you hand it off to your friend or coworker.

Seagate GoFlex for Mac and PC External Hard Drive GiveawayThe second part is what Seagate calls a personality cable. This is a single cable that attaches to the back of the enclosure to create a single external hard drive unit capable of plugging directly into another device. The cables included with the Seagate GoFlex varies from model to model, but you are able to purchase any one of them as an optional upgrade. This works to cut overall product costs as Seagate doesn’t need to include a buffet of cables with each drive.

Unlike previous FreeAgent drives, the GoFlex has a three-year warranty. Even though Seagate has shaved two years off its previous FreeAgent warranty plans, this is still a longer warranty period than what you will find on most portable hard drives.

Seagate has generously offered to give one of these drives away to the LockerGnome community. All you need to do to qualify for this giveaway is leave a comment on the YouTube video (above).

As an unemployed student, I could really use this harddrive for my upcoming Sound Design class. It would be great to have something like that to hold and store all my class multimedia projects (which take up a lot of space). I love Seagate!!

    Chris,

Giveaways and discounts really help your fellow geeks have useful geek tools, and give them the hands-on experience to try new products and spread the good words to the less geeky. Thanks to you for sharing. (Well, yes, this is a bit of a suck-up, but I really mean it! I wouldn’t say so if I didn’t think highly of both the man and the brand currently in discussion.)

Ahh, love those self-powered drives! Just got a new (refurb) iMac and really need to replace my ageing Seagate wall-powered backup with a self-powered one that I could attach to my Airport Extreme. At last, my tiny, cramped desk would have some space on it! (I keep the Airport Extreme up on a dedicated “wireless” shelf above my desk.)

I could use the older Seagate drive as a dedicated backup to my BootCamp volume, which needs less storage space and right now gets backed up a bit haphazardly onto a groaning thumbdrive.

that would look sweet on my desk!!

I could really use the drive. Mine just died, luckily I was able to back the data up to my friends computer but now he wants his space back.

    Hey Chris,

Great drive would love it :-) I just sold my T2i and purchased a new T3i and thought I would share with you that you can only record videos for 12 mins due to over heating and 4 gb file size limitation. So if you don’t mind recording and then shutting off your camera and then turning it back on then its a great camera.

    Hi Chris:

Nice job on the video. It’s amazing how much storage you can get now. By the way you never seem to age….you look the same as when I first saw you long ago!

  • John Crudden

I like the idea of a giveaway. It perks my interest. The video explained the drive very well. Even if I don’t get a free one, I will look to purchase one. John.
