How to Interpret Computer Beep Codes

When your computer makes those funny beeping sounds via the system speaker, it’s not doing it to hear itself talk. The computer is trying to tell you something is wrong. How do you interpret those beeps?

  • No Beeps Short, No power, Bad CPU/MB, Loose Peripherals
  • One Beep Everything is normal and Computer POSTed fine
  • Two Beeps POST/CMOS Error
  • One Long Beep, One Short Beep Motherboard Problem
  • One Long Beep, Two Short Beeps Video Problem
  • One Long Beep, Three Short Beeps Video Problem
  • Three Long Beeps Keyboard Error
  • Repeated Long Beeps Memory Error
  • Continuous Hi-Lo Beeps CPU Overheating

Thanks a lot for this Chris. I had an old, well, really old Sony Vaio that I have been trying to get up and running again for some time now. It was the first computer that I ever bought and I’m interisted as to what is still on the Hard Drive. When I would start it up it would start beeping and I didn’t know what the hell it ment. Now, with the information you’ve provided maby I can finally get it operational again! Thanks a ton Chris!

Hello,

I believe there can be some variation in motherboard beep codes, so it might be a good idea to double-check with the computer or motherboard manufacturer, just in case the beep codes for a particular motherboard are different than those listed.

Whenever my dad turns on his computer he gets those H-Lo beeps. He resets his computer and everything is fine until he shuts down and turns on his computer a few hours later.

So why would it be doing that? It’s been happening since he reinstalled XP a few years ago.

What does ‘no beeps’ sound like?

If you just want to see what’s on the hard drive, there’s no point in reviving the computer. Pull the hard drive and connect it with USB to IDE/SATA cable and browse to your heart’s content.
