Review: HP Pavilion dv5170us Notebook

I’ll buy an HP printer, but as a rule I just don’t care for the PCs and notebooks. Regardless of this fact, this HP Pavilion dv5170us did better in the review below than I initially expected…

Hewlett-Packard’s new widescreen laptop comes close to being an ideal desktop replacement. The HP Pavilion dv5170us comes with Intel’s mobile dual-core processor chipset and ample storage capacity. Although it disappoints in a few areas, the 5170 offers enough must-have features to make it a good choice for both the road and the home office.

Look and Feel

The 5170 has a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD with a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels. The widescreen chassis provides a comfortable, uncrowded design within the unit’s dimensions of 1.4 x 14.1 x 10.4 inches. The notebook, partly due to its bigger footprint and well-appointed equipment, is a bit on the heavy side, weighing almost 7 pounds with the battery installed.

The shiny LCD screen produced a very sharp and clear picture. Text display was also clear around the edges of words.

The power button, DVD, and volume controls are spread out across the top of the function keys. A pair of Altec Lansing speakers are fixed on the top edge as well, and the notebook comes with a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume control, a nice bonus.

The keys are well-spaced and large enough so that little adjustment is needed from typing on a full-size desktop keyboard. The Shift and Enter keys are large…. Source: Newsfactor Network
