To be frank, Intel needs this and they needed this edge pretty badly. Perhaps not from a financial perspective. However their collective egos could use the boost…
The drive to create machines with smarter and faster chips will reach a milestone a year from now when processors with four cores, or brains, roll out of factories at Intel.
Codenamed Clovertown, the quad-core processor will give startups a critical ingredient for a generation of powerful new machines. Niveus Media, based in Los Gatos, California, already uses Intel’s new dual-core processors to build fanless Media Center systems for watching, recording, and managing high-definition TV shows, videos, and photos. Quad-core processors promise even more multimedia capabilities.
Intel will talk more about its multi-core technologies at this week’s Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. The chip giant, based in Santa Clara, California, plans to ship Clovertown to server makers in the first quarter of 2007. Source: Red Herring
