Would you buy a CPU from VIA? Ya, me either. I just can’t seem to wrap my mind around the idea of them selling me a processor! While the market may bear the additional competition, I am not convinced that VIA has a chance whatsoever - even in the mobile world.
VIA Technologies Inc. will reopen its central-processing unit (CPU) production line, which has been idle for two years, in anticipation of bright outlook for ultra mobile personal computers (UMPC).
The company announced it secured orders from Japanese contract-computer supplier PBJ Inc. for its C7-M ULV processors, which boast unprecedented power efficiency that enables an exciting range of ultra compact and ultra portable devices, on March 12 at CeBIT 2006.
Industry watchers pointed out that the new product highlights VIA’s awareness that it could not compete with Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in the market for standard core logic devices. UMPC is a niche market featuring diversified product items with good profits. Source: Taiwan Headlines
