AMD Names Enterprise Multicore Chief

As AMD begins to dig themselves in for a new kind of chip war, they just named a new Multicore Chief. ExtremeTech is reporting that Rich Oehler is to head up the enterprise multicore computing program for AMD.
Advanced Micro Devices said Monday that it has hired former Newisys Corp. chief technical officer Rich Oehler to manage its enterprise multicore computing program.
Oehler will report to AMD chief technical officer Fred Weber as a member of AMD’s Office of Strategy and Technology, the company said. Oehler will be asked to oversee AMD’s multicore enterprise computing strategies to CIOs and other senior executives.
AMD, Intel, and its rivals are positioning the dual-core products as premium parts, ideal for scientific and high-performance computing. Because of their rarified nature, the dual-core products are also expected to command a price premium, a high-margin plum that both Intel and AMD hope to pluck. Since AMD is currently still confined to a single fab, analysts have suspected that the larger size of the dual-core die will limit AMD’s ability to manufacture dual-core parts.
