Samsung ready to mass produce 1GB FB DIMMs

DDR-2 memory modules already? It seems so according to The Inquirer. Reports indicate that the Samsung modules will be able to offer a full 1 GB of bandwidth support once the modules are ready for the market.

That is impressive! Then again, with the constant need for faster memory, this is a logical and honestly needed step in the evolution of the DRR memory module I suppose.

The memory division of Samsung said it will make a 1GB fully buffered (FB) DDR-2 memory module which will improve bandwidth for servers and workstations.

Samsung said that memory modules now gives a decrease in slot acces rate per channel as the memory bus speed increases.

But the FB DIMM, claimed Samsung, gets rid of the channel bottleneck by using point to point links. That lets multiple memory modules connect serially to a channel.

Each module will have a memory buffer chip which can generate speeds of 3.2Gbps to 4.8Gbps, said Samsung, which is six times that of the DRAM.

What Do You Think?
