In more serious news, Emiel N. Petrone,a major advocate of CD and DVD technology died at age 61. The man was a pivotal component of both the CD and DVD formats becoming the must haves that they are today.

Petrone helped create the DVD Video Group — an alliance of 50 content providers, technology companies and retailers — during the launch of the DVD format in the States in 1997. He served as chairman of the nonprofit consortium, which is credited with the rapid consumer adoption of the format.

The Los Angeles-based organization was rechartered as the DVD Entertainment Group in January 2000 to incorporate the new DVD-Audio format. Last year, with Petrone still serving as chairman, the organization was rechartered again as the Digital Entertainment Group to reflect its goal of promoting other emerging digital formats.
