What will 7 cost?

Microsoft still has not released pricing details on Windows 7 but there have been a few clues as to what the prices might look like.  Best Buy had a leaked memo about Windows 7 pricing for an upcoming sale - the price for the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home was to be 49 dollars, which is right around where it needs to be.  But that was a special sale price, the full price is likely to be around what Microsoft has been charging for Windows Vista, which ran for 129 dollars.  Given that Windows 7 has been described as “what Windows Vista was supposed to be,” it seems strange that they would be selling the software for such a high price - especially since Apple released a similar upgrade to their operating system for only 29 dollars.

Since Microsoft would never do the smart thing, and sell one copy of Windows 7 for a reasonable price, the least they could do would be to keep the price of the upgrade for home premium at around the 49 dollar or lower mark.  It would probably go a long way towards making their power users happy if they would just give the upgrade away for free to those that purchased Windows Vista Ultimate, call it the ultimate extra.

I thought it came out that they were going to price at $99? Honestly I think they should have 1 version, none of this home, office and ultimate crap and price it more more then $99. Really they need to counter apple and drop it further. I think you’d see a lot less pirated copies of the OS.
