3G (S) - What’s in a name?

I get the 3G part of the iPhone’s name, but where does the S come into it? I know they say it is for speed - as in this new iPhone is much faster than the old 3G model - but I don’t buy it. I think the Apple iPhone 3GS got its name because someone thought it would be a nice homage to the old Apple IIGS. 2GS and now the 3GS. That makes sense to me, saying the S is for speed does not.

An interesting theory. I don’t believe anyone else mentioned it. It would be a good homage for an old product.
