Has the internet killed the TV?

The short answer to that is no; the long answer will take a few more sentences. With the rise of sites such as YouTube and having most major television channels giving people the ability of viewing whole episodes on their computers it would seem like there is now no need to devote time out of your life to watch TV on someone else’s schedule.
Now you can watch the programs you want when you want to watch them. Only catch is, for most people at least, you have to watch it on your computer. That might seem like it isn’t that big of a deal, but quite a few people still watch TV with other people and it is hard to do that while watching a computer monitor.
The people that claim the TV is dead and that the internet has killed it tend to be more technically savvy and, this is just a guess based on stereotypes, probably spend their time on the computer by themselves. This might explain why they are so quick to dismiss television as a dead media. They might not watch shows such as Dancing With the Stars or American Idol, but plenty of people do and they tend to watch it with friends.
Of course the real killer for the notion of the death of television is and likely will always be sports. For the sports fan there is nothing better than watching the game on a big screen television. It would be all but impossible to invite your friends over to watch a football game on a 15 inch monitor, even if you had one of the 30 inch monitors it would still be a poor substitute for a proper television set in a comfortable living room. So let us put to bed this notion that the internet will kill off the television because it just isn’t going to happen.

Well the internet has killed many devices such as the television. But I don’t believe that the internet has killed them, I just believe that the internet has made it more easier with a bit of everything on the internet. There’s youtube for example which has made things more easier for people that just want to get there videos in the eyes of others. There is also websites like ebay which allow you to sell stuff online instead of having to sell stuff in a garage sale, which pretty much no one goes to anymore because there is ebay. There is even news websites now that you can look at news that you want to see and not just what’s on the TV news or what’s in the paper, say for example that like me, you like to hear news about computers well I come from New Zealand and the problem is the TVNZ news never talks about computer news when everything to do with computers is in America. So all I have to do is to go onto the internet and look up whatever I want about computers. Even though on TV you can only watch what’s on that day and at that time, TV’s are still good to watch and will continue to be a part of humans day to day life for years to come. Also I believe that the internet is a very powerful tool because you name a hobby and the internet has massive amounts of information about any hobby in the world thats why everyone likes the internet. Even games, the internet has lots of game websites that have games on them, that really good. Media like Music, the iTunes library has made a big one with that. So to sum it all up, I believe that the internet has a bit of everything in it to make everyones life easier and better.

“…nothing better than watching the game on a big screen television…”
It’s no big deal to hook up your computer to your big screen.
What’s going to kill broadcast TV is the poorly planned digital conversion. If the broadcasters refuse to improve signal strength, they’ll just be cutting their own throats.
I bought a converter box (went from 7 stations to 2). I refuse to throw any more cash at an industry of such marginal quality. I’ll get the few shows that I value off the net–for free and usually commercial free.

TV may not be completely dead… but the internet has definitely put a dagger straight through the old boob tube’s heart. I can only speak from my own personal experience, but I spend A LOT more time on the internet than I do watching TV. If fact, I hardly watch any television at all. This has really nothing to do with the fact that I can watch “all of my favorite programs” online now. Come to think of it, I don’t even have any favorite programs anymore. So I’m not using the internet as a TV… I ditched the whole concept of TV for something completely different, and far more entertaining (and addicting).
