No.  There, I said it and there is no going back.  A lobbyist’s main job is to remain a lobbyist, and by that I mean they have to convince the people that give them money to lobby on their behalf are actually getting something for their money - if they can do that then they will get more money to continue being a lobbyist.  An important thing to know is that lobbyists do not buy votes with promises of campaign contributions or the promise of a nice cushy job with the company they represent.  What lobbyists do is pass on information, the member of Congress can either choose to use or ignore the information that is given to them.  The key to being a good lobbyist is to know who already agrees with your positions ahead of time and lobby them - instant recipe for success.  Would a lobbyist last long in Washington D.C. if he or she spent all their time lobbying for the National Rifle Association if all they did was try and convince left wing liberals that background checks for hand gun purchases are overrated and should be scrapped?  Probably not, but take that same lobbyist and have him or her lobby the right wing conservatives and you might find that the lobbyist now has a promising career - why?  Because the lobbyist can now go back to the NRA and show them the number of people they talked to and how many of them supported his or her point of view.  Did the lobbyist actually change anyone’s point of view on the subject of background checks?  No, the lobbyist simply found people that already agreed with the NRA’s position and took credit for finding supporters.  That is what lobbyists do, they find people that already agree with them and who would support the legislations they want and then take credit when a bill passes, and claim that they put up a good fight but that they were outspent by competing lobbyists when their bill fails.  Lobbying is a great line of work if you can get it…  All money and no actual work - isn’t politics great?
