Even though Blu-ray came out on top in the HD format war, many people are yet to made the switch over. Surprisingly enough, there is still a market for the older bit still popular DVD format. Why aren’t people making the switch over? Two words. High prices.
Right now, even the cheapest Blu-ray player will set you back $300. And that doesn’t include the fact that to put it to good use, you’ll need to have an HDTV, which will put a large dent in your wallet as well.
New Blu-ray releases cost $30 per movie. At the same time, you can usually expect to find the same movie in DVD format for $10 to $15 less. Being a movie fan is getting to just as expensive as being a gamer.
I have a PS3, which means I also have a Blu-Ray player. I’ve had it for about 5 months now, and yet I still haven’t bought a single movie. Why? They’re too expensive, and there’s nothing worth getting right now.
Physical media is a dieing format. People are starting to get into direct downloads, or just streaming over the web. While you won’t get Hi-Def quality, it’s the convenience that makes it a thriving market. To most people, music CD’s are a thing of the past, and Movie Discs will be on their way out too.
What about you? Have you gone Blu-ray? If not, what’s holding you back?

I was one who bought a Toshiba HD-DVD (the losing standard) sometime before Christmas at a really low price (with a few free movies thrown in.)
The great thing is, it upscales my regular DVDs to look great, so I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it, AND I can watch Transformers in HD, and I could STILL buy 2 more of them without reaching the price of a Blu-Ray.
Think I lost the format war? By the time Blu-Ray gets down to affordability, those of us who bought HD-DVD will have had thousands of hours of great movies in high res– well worth the money.
