HOW TO: Get an Extra 5% off ANYTHING From Amazon.com
UPDATE: *SIGH* It seems there is some confusion thanks to people linking this story. The descriptions they are giving aren’t 100% correct. (I’m looking at YOU Gizmodo! XP) You are not claiming that you own the item you want, but something closely related to it! Amazon won’t give you any discount if it think you already own it anyway! I suggest you claim you own the item under the “BETTER TOGETHER” section. since amazon has already determined those items are the best pair available. ALSO! If you have bought anything from amazon before, you HAVE to edit your account setting so you don’t get deals on those items as well. This way the item you actually want has a better chance of coming up as a deal! (Scroll down for instructions on how to do this.)
If you’re planning on ordering something expensive in the future, and don’t mind waiting an extra day, you can save an extra 5% by following a few simple steps!
1. Join and Sign in to Amazon.com
2. Go to the page of the item you want to get
NOTE: The item HAS to be sold by Amazon.com or it won’t work!
3. Click the OTHER Item under the “BETTER TOGETHER” section, not the item you want.
4. Scroll down to the “Rate This Item” section and check the “I Own it” Box.
5. Come back the next day, and go to the “Today’s Deals” page next to the gold box at the top
6. Scroll down to your “Quick Picks”
7. The item you wanted should now be listed there, WITH the 5% discount applied.
If you have purchased item from Amazon before, you’ll need to adjust a few settings so they don’t affect the quick pick deals.
• At the top of Amazon’s page, click on “Recommendations”.
• This will list everything that is recommend broken down by category.
• Remove everything not related to the item you want by clicking “Not interested” this may take quite a bit of time if you’ve purchased a few items from Amazon. Another quick way to remove unwanted items is to click on “Fix This” on an item and then click on “Don’t use for recommendations”.
These deals are meant to make you want to buy something related to another item you already purchased from Amazon. But buy checking the “I Own It” box, Amazon will give you deals on related items. Remember, you want to say you own something related to the item you want, NOT the item itself!

Interesting theory, but will it work after hitting the front page of Gizmodo? It seems every college student is going to try to take advantage of this soon!

this has been done numerous times with PS3 console. Would be interesting to see if it can indeed work with anything. Though it better be a bigger ticket item otherwise 5% of say $40 is not really worth the hassle.

Umm…Try again, guys, the Giz didn’t screw it up.
From this post:
1. Join and Sign in to Amazon.com
2. Go to the page of the item you want to get
NOTE: The item HAS to be sold by Amazon.com or it won’t work!
3. Click the Item under the “BETTER TOGETHER” section
Look at step #3, it says to click “the item.” It doesn’t say anything about which item, except that the previous step said to “Go to the page of the item you want to get.”
The only clarification of this comes at the very bottom of the article, “Remember, you want to say you own something related to the item you want, NOT the item itself!”
Someone following the outlined steps only, would have screwed it up. So step #3 should say, “3. Click the OTHER Item under the “BETTER TOGETHER” section, not the item you want.”
So quit blaming other people for your mistakes! =)
REPLY FROM GRIFF: Well aren’t you clever? If you’re going to be that picky, then fine I’ll fix that area of confusion. Guess I gotta remember what kind of people are on the internet. Request noted and added. Thank you. [END REPLY]

Wow. That’s a pathetic excuse. Why would you click the other item under “better together”? You’re ALREADY on that item’s page. Clicking there simply reloads the page you’re already on.
Giz didn’t bother to read the instructions. Not a big deal, but still their screwup. Also, I’m not from lockergnome, I followed the giz link.
“Remember, you want to say you own something related to the item you want, NOT the item itself!”

Anyone worried about this disappearing shouldn’t. They already have limits that prevent abuse. You don’t get these picks until after you’ve made a purchase. You can only use one per day. And there are other limits. This is built into their pricing structure, just like traditional advertising.
It didn’t work for me yesterday because I ignored your advice about clearing out my recommendations. I’ve been an amazon member for forever, have multiple wishlists and a hundred or so purchases. It took for fraking ever to clear it all out, even using “don’t use this for recommendations”.
@D, not so for college students. .05 * $40 = $2.00. $2.00 = my meals for most days. Well worth it.

Griff, not trying to be a jerk, it just didn’t read right. Several people over on Giz noticed the same mistake…had someone not read the article to the very end, they would have made the mistake when trying to get the 5% off…
LOL, now people will probably wonder what “OTHER” item means, which of course, will get blamed on me, but oh, well…

Wow that’s a pretty slick discovery, I just tried it and it does work. Another way to get discounts from most any company that sells stuff online is to become an affiliate. Become an amazon affiliate and get money back every time you refer an amazon product to yourself!

Wow, I’ll give this a shot, thanks for the tip!
