!st hole at Augusta is 455 yards so is a no brainer for me. I cant drive far enough to reach the traps on the right and the long second shot will leave me well short of the green side bunker so its not a “tin cup ” moment for me! Drive to the middle of the generous landing area, second shot with a 3 fairway metal 50 yds short of the bunker and a 52 degree wedge to the sloped green..one putt and im off to a good start! Im even par at the Masters?….virtually, at least!

How far you hit any particular shot depends on the club, the ball, the wind, the ground conditions (lush grass, frozen tundra, hard ground, cart-path, etc.
Remember the bet in TIN CUP, where the don Johnson character won the bet hitting a 4 iron down an asphalt highway?, http://www.amazon.com/Tin-Cup-Kevin-Costner/dp/0790730995,

Most male golfers hit an 8 iron an average of 125 to 135 yards. You need to determine what is YOUR average by hitting a quantity of practice balls on a practice range where you know the distances exactly or can pace off the distance to confirm the posted distances.

Can you hit it straight as you can point?…

After you know how far you hit an 8 iron, you are ready to begin to play around virtually!

First thing first! You have a set of clubs that you inherited from your Uncle and were old when he used them. Chances are, they are too upright or too flat or in some way just don’t fit you!….You need to get clubs that fit you….If you are like me 5 ft 8… or so you can use clubs off the shelf to start, since golf clubs are generally made for average height players..if you are way taller or shorter you need to get someone to help you find some clubs that fit you!

There are lots of references available, but the rule of thumb is that the bottom of the club should rest flat on the ground when it is placed behind the ball. I prefer the toe of the club to be a bit off the ground and i would use that as a standard..flat to toe slightly off the ground..never with heel off the ground!

Now if you have your clubs or at least your eight iron that seems to fit you, you can begin the process of learning to play your “best golf”

Next?…how far should I be able to hit an eight iron?

The first thing any golfer needs to know, if he/she is playing golf for real or on a virtual course, is how far he/she can expect the ball to travel when hit with each club in the bag. And how precise can the trajectory be estimated? And how straight..do you fade, hook, slice?

If you know how consistent you are you can play any course and know your score on average within a few strokes of your actual score without stepping foot on the real course!

Im going to tell you how to do that in my next post..you will be amazed at how easy and effective this is going to be and how quickly your game improves.

If you are an amateur, you will develop a real confidence in your abilities, and if you are playing for money at any level, you will suddenly be in control of your game!

I am going to show you how to play a round virtually on your golf course or on any course you choose, even the most difficult and inaccessible. I will play a round with you at Augusta, http://www.masters.org/en_US/course/index.html, and Pebble Beach, http://www.pebblebeach.com/page.asp?id=1280, maybe even Pine Valley!

I have been playing around virtually at every golf course in the US and many in Scotland, Canada, and even Dubai!

I am not a professional;, although in my youth I played a few state opens and actually gave lessons , posing as a skilled instructor for a very brief moment!

All of this is possible, because I became a follower of the Silver Scot, Tommy Armour, and immersed myself in his teachings and applied them over my long and somewhat undistinguished career on the links.

So here we have the first post in what will be my daily rantings on the only theory of Golf that makes any sense at all. If you are impatient to hear the whole story you can get it as told by the master, himself by going to Amazon and buying the best golf instruction book ever written, by the silver Scot himself. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684813793?tag=httpwwwmacdon-20

If you aspire to be a better golfer, or just enjoy the mediocre game you possess, you have come to the right place to begin. Have a good day. Ciao from sunny Florida!
