I would like to wish a happy 83rd birthday to Senator Ted “The Tube” Stevens. I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Stevens. No one has ever been able to explain technological things like the internet to me in such plain language. For the longest time, I thought that the internet WAS a big truck that you just dump something on. I used to just throw things on the internet without any regard for other people’s personal internets. I figured, “it’s a big truck, it can handle the load.”

Now that I understand that the internet is a series of tubes, I treat it much differently. I don’t want those tubes to get filled with enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. No longer does my staff send an internet on Friday and it gets delayed until Wednesday. My personal internet is free of any blockages.

If you also appreciate Mr. Stevens as much as I do, please comment below with your birthday wishes for him. On Wednesday, Nov 22, I will be sending the office of Senator Stevens a belated birthday cake with a copy of all of the comments this entry receives. The cake will be delivered by Federal Express…..on a big truck.

(Yes, I’m aware that tube jokes are old - like Ted Stevens himself - but it’s his birthday, damn it..)

Free Talk Live - Mad World

While this does break from the general theme around here, I think it’s fairly well done. A regular listener of the nationally syndicated talk radio program Free Talk Live put together this mix of quotes from the show and Gary Jules’ remake of “Mad World”. It deals primarily with the current legal definition of an “enemy combatant” and how it can be interpreted for use against most normal American citizens. Take a couple of minutes and listen, you might learn something.

Ron Kind - The wRONg Kind?

One of the best things about midterm election time is looking around the country for the best political attack ads. This time around it looks like the winner is the Republican candidate for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, Paul R. Nelson. He’s up against the incumbent Congressman, a gentleman named Ron Kind. Apparently Mr. Kind has voted for some interesting funding during his time in office. I’m not sure who I like better: Paul Nelson for the way he presents his points, or Ron Kind for voting to “study the sex lives of Vietnamese prostitutes.” It’s a tough call.

I’m voting for Kay Granger

CNET News has recently put together a list of the 17 most poorly designed campaign websites. There are, of course, some that are nothing but “coming soon” pages. There are a few others that look like FrontPage templates. My personal favorite is the site for Texas’ 12th Congressional District Representative Kay Granger. Not only is she all about “Celebrating Our Nation’s Values”, but she also likes to cook. A quick peek at the “Cooking with Kay” section of her site will give a reader access to a wide array of recipes, including this one for “Easy, Killer Margaritas”.

Ingredients:
Frozen Limeade (any size)
Tequila (your choice)
Beer (your choice)

Empty the limeade into a pitcher. Using the empty can as a measure, add 1 can of tequila and 1 can of beer to the pitcher

Stir and pour over ice. Squeeze wedge of fresh lime on top.

Remember: Our Nation’s Values = Equal Parts Tequila and Beer.
