Blockdot Launches Hillary Vs. Obama Game

With the 2008 Democratic presidential primary in high gear, Dallas-based Blockdot has released Hillary vs. Obama, a hilarious game that brings new meaning to the term “political warfare.”

Pick the Democrat you support, then click your mouse repeatedly to punch, drag, and knock your opponent out of the race. The faster you click, the more party points you earn. You have only 15 seconds before the Secret Service will pull you off the candidate, so don’t hold back! For extra points, hit the Bill Clinton and Reverend Wright sock puppets that appear on the sidelines.

Will Hillary or Obama take the White House, or will their bickering burn out the voters — and lead to a McCain victory?

To play Hillary vs. Obama — or hundreds of other awesomely addictive games — visit Blockdot’s gaming portal kewlbox.com.

Science Museum’s Launchball Best Of The Web

The Science Museum has received further international recognition with two more awards for its innovative online game Launchball.

The game, developed to accompany the museum’s recently reinvented interactive gallery Launchpad, has won both ‘Best Innovative Site’ and overall ‘Best of the Web’ at Museums and the Web 2008 - the international conference for museums and heritage online in Montreal, Canada. Launchball had already been named ‘Best Game’ and ‘Best in Show’ at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas.

Each year Museums and the Web recognises the best in museum web design and development in the ‘Best of the Web’ competition - the most prestigious international web awards for the museum sector.

Judges praised Launchball for its enjoyable addictiveness and “very intelligent scripting,” “impressive array of interactive and very stimulating games” and “superb graphics and multimedia integration.”

Launchball is an online game aimed at 8-14 year olds which incorporates the rules of physics and ties in with the content of the museum’s new Launchpad gallery. The game is a collaboration between the Science Museum and online gaming company Preloaded.

Daniel Evans, Launchball’s Project Director and Head of Web at the Science Museum said, “Launchball has really captured popular imagination and we’re very proud that it is now a multi-award winning game. It’s amazing to see how popular the game has become - getting 1.7 million players and a community of 100,000 users creating their own levels and swapping them with their friends. The key to our success is largely due to Preloaded’s understanding of the game genre combined with the Science Museum’s understanding of its audience.”

Emily Scott-Dearing, Launchpad Project Leader said, “We’re putting players’ physics know-how to the test because whilst the game feels like addictive fun, key messages about the laws of physics underpin every level. That’s why Launchball, just like the gallery Launchpad that inspired it, is a great educational tool as teachers can incorporate the game into science lessons via their interactive white boards.”

The new Launchpad project has been made possible by support from principal sponsor Shell, major sponsor Nintendo, major funder The Garfield Weston Foundation, with additional support from The Zochonis Charitable Trust. Andrew Eddy, Director, Shell UK said: “For Shell, it is imperative that we engage young people in science and encourage them to discover how the world works. The Launchball game is a wonderful extension to the Launchpad gallery; it allows children throughout the world to learn the principles of physics and develop their problem solving skills.”

In the two months between the game going live and the Launchpad gallery opening in November 2007, Launchball attracted over 1 million online visitors. It also featured on the front page of news website Digg and was projected on to the side of the Shell Bank Centre on London’s South Bank.

LEGO Indiana Jones Web Game Online

Three Melons has teamed up with LEGO to create its latest Flash Web-based advergame: LEGO.com Indiana Jones. The game features Indy as its main star and easy to learn, hard to master gameplay suitable for players of different ages. “LEGO is an amazing client to work with and being able to play with Indy was something amazing for the team,” said Mariano Suarez Battan, Captain Melon (aka CEO) at the studio.

“We wanted to keep true to the Indiana Jones story, provide astounding visuals, and mouse driven gameplay that allows everybody to play but makes it complex to achieve the maximum score possible,” declared Pablo Mayer and Augusto Petrone, Producer and Lead Game Designer respectively in the project.

Brent Hill, the Internet content manager of LEGO Playthemes commented: “The LEGO Indiana Jones online game sets a new bar for wickedly-fun play, integration with our global communication strategy, faithfulness to the storyline, and excellent adherence to the LEGO brand values. (And have you seen the graphics? They ROCK!) Three Melons has far exceeded our brief and I look forward to partnering with its staff more in the future!”

Valentine’s Day Version Of CandyGram On Facebook

Legacy Interactive today launched a special Valentine version of the casual word game CandyGram on Facebook, as a flash game and a widget. Players slide chocolate letter tiles around a 7×7 digital board to form words horizontally and vertically. The Valentine’s version of CandyGram has a valentine-inspired skin and is geared towards word combinations like “love” and “heart” as well as the usual vocabulary. When all the tiles on the board have been used before the clock runs out, players advance to the next round. There are five levels of difficulty to chose from.

The Facebook CandyGram application allows players to send secret messages to the “Friends” in their social network. The secret writings can be unlocked only when recipients beat the challenger’s score. Top scores are posted in an online leader board. The CandyGram Facebook application can be downloaded to a user’s profile from here.

Congo Jones Faces The Loggers Of Doom In African Rainforests

The Rainforest Foundation UK has launched Congo Jones and the Loggers of Doom, an online game challenging players to safeguard the planet’s last rainforest frontier.

Congo Jones’ mission comes as the Congolese rainforest - the second largest on the planet after the Amazon - is under the carving knife. An area the size of France is at risk. The global threat is heightened with the knowledge that rainforest destruction is the second largest cause of global warming.

Players are invited to jump logs, climb waterfalls and evade chainsaws to help forest peoples save their lands before it’s too late.

“The game presents a very serious issue in an interactive way so that players want to take action to stop the carve-up of the Congo rainforest,” said Helen Brownstone, Head of Fundraising and Communications at the Rainforest Foundation.

Mike Ditka’s Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge

Two premium brands within the fantasy sports world — Fanball.com and DitkaSports.com — are working together to raise money to benefit the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund. The companies have launched a fantasy football game for the NFL playoffs, one hundred percent of the proceeds from the game are being donated to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

Fans can register between now and January 5th to participate in Mike Ditka’s Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge. The game’s entrants will compete for an opportunity to have a private meet and greet with Mike Ditka at his Chicago Steakhouse followed by dinner. Various memorabilia items and apparel signed by NFL Legends such as Gale Sayers, Mike Ditka, Paul Hornung, Barry Sanders and many others are also up for grabs. Fantasy football players can get more information on this exciting game for a good cause and sign up by visiting gridirongreats.org.

“I’m really excited about what we’re going to accomplish,” said Mike Ditka, Gridiron Greats Board Member. “We’ve got two first-class companies who are working together to do something special that will not only help to raise money to provide much-needed assistance for retired players but will also provide a way for the fans to have some fun, win some great prizes all while helping a great cause.”

The game officially starts on January 5th and will challenge entrants to fill a twenty-man roster with players whose teams will be playing in the NFL playoffs. Fantasy football contests that are held during the NFL playoffs offer a fun twist, since average players on winning teams will often total more fantasy points than superstar players whose teams lose after one game. More information about how the game works can be found at DitkaSports.com and Fanball.com.

Entrants will pay $10 to play the game and compete for the prizes. One hundred percent of the sign up fees are being donated to the Gridiron Greats by DitkaSports.com and Fanball.com. Sign up for the game ends on January 5th, fans are encouraged to visit gridirongreats.org and sign up prior to that date.

“DitkaSports.com is committed to using it’s resources to raising awareness for the Gridiron Greats,” said Brett Baker, president of Fantasy Coverage. “We know that our users will welcome the chance to support a great cause and extend their fantasy football season at the same time.”

Jim Enright, Director of Business Development for Fanball.com, added “We’re of course thrilled to be working with DitkaSports.com and the fact that in doing so we also are able to help retired football players in need is something that we’re very proud of.”

Puzzle City To Launch On Yahoo! Games October 8th

Casual games developer and publisher eGames, Inc. announced today that its new city building puzzle game, Puzzle City will launch online on Yahoo! Games on October 8 for an exclusive two week period, following the recent success of eGames’ internally developed fast-food themed game Burger Island.

"Yahoo! Games represents the ideal launching pad for Puzzle City," said eGames Product Manager Greg Zesinger. "Through exposure to millions of casual game fans on the site, Puzzle City should get off to an excellent start right out of the gate."

Puzzle City puts the player in the shoes of a newly hired construction manager in a unique combination of city building simulations and block-dropping puzzle arcade action. Under the watchful eye of real estate maven Mz. Towers, the player assembles buildings from color-coded construction blocks before the company’s conveyor belt backs up, revitalizing 48 different cityscapes by building homes, factories, shopping malls, schools, fire stations, and more. With the help of Biff and his construction crew, the player must utilize power-ups to bulldoze unnecessary buildings, freeze, reverse, break up or detonate construction pieces, and spray paint new colors across multiple stages, including snow-covered mountains, deserts, swamps, and even a lunar colony. Players can put themselves on the construction fast track in Story Mode or build at a more leisurely pace in Untimed Mode.

"As eGames continues to develop its own proprietary titles such as Puzzle City and Burger Island, it is gratifying to see the overwhelmingly positive response to our games from both our distribution partners like Yahoo! and our casual game consumers," said Zesinger. "We eagerly anticipate Puzzle City’s success and will continue to build our portfolio of exciting and innovative casual games."

Free trials of Puzzle City will be available here and here during the exclusive period, with the full game available for purchase at $19.99. A Web version of the game is also expected for online release within the next few weeks.

In addition, the Station Pass has transitioned into a free online game service available to all players.

Wings 1915

War is a terrible stab of barbarism that arises at times in human history. Today, let’s rise above the atrocities of war and away from the painful shrieks of wounded buddies. Let’s lift ourselves above it all, up, up into the atmosphere.

In today’s game, Wings 1915, you don the tell-tale courageous hues of a World War One flying ace. You have been enlisted to fire deadly slugs into the Kaiser’s fly-by-wire contraptions who will try to do the same to you, if you let them. Your combat aircraft only carries so much ammo and fuel so don’t forget to keep an eye out for supplies magically floating in the sky.

Wings 1915 is a nice looking, easy to play side-scroller with the feel of a shooting gallery. The computer opponents aren’t very smart, and are easy to shoot down, although they get slightly more aggressive as the game progresses. But only slightly.

Stalin’s Secret

These days we can look back with bemusement at the Soviet era. But there was a time when hammers and sickles were something to be dreaded and fought. The best villains since the Nazis were Soviets. And the most insidious Soviet villain will always be Stalin.

In today’s feature, Stalin’s Secret, you play the part of a Soviet test pilot putting a top-secret rocket-pack through its paces. Being an alpha test, the game is unfinished and is more of a series of rocket pack activities than a full-fledged action game. Still we had a great time floating around with the flying rucksack.

The 3D graphics are well done and look first-rate. And you’ll have plenty of time to admire them because the rocket pack is as slow and clunky as any Communist system.

The Classroom

Calling today’s featured game educational is, well, at bit of a stretch.

Remember when you forgot to study for a test and the class geek sat right next to you? In The Classroom, you get to explore the art of cheating. Yes, you read correctly: a game that actually rewards you for cheating! The object of the game is to use your ninja-like skills of stealth in order to avoid the teacher’s gaze. And we all know that the gaze is instantly fatal. Not only do you have avoid that gaze, but you have to do it for long enough to copy all the test answers. You know, cheating isn’t as easy as some people think.

In this game you are somewhat lucky in that your teacher, like a prison guard, usually moves in a pattern. And like an escaping prisoner, you need to know when to make your move. Fortunately for you, the geek that you’re getting your answers from is obliging, and the rest of the class is pretty much neutral. Should you get to the fourth level in this game, consider yourself lucky - and getting past the fourth requires genius. We’re told that it’s not impossible, just very, very difficult. In the spirit of the game, we can’t help but wonder if there is a cheat code. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

We like this game because we haven’t seen anything else out there like it. And it goes to prove that sometimes cheating is harder than actually studying… and even more heart-pounding fun!

Redneck Games

Howz ’bout sum gooood old-fashion’d down-home country humor? Today we’re bringin’ you a selection of games to satisfy yer inner hillbilly funny-bone.

Redneck Games comes to you from planet Blue Collar Comedy Hour. It’s a collection of hayseed sporting events. A bumpkin olympics, if you will. Some games are single-player and others are multiplayer. There’s even chatting in the lobby in case you’d rather chew the fat with other rustic yokels.

Redneck Games are solid with great gameplay and enough humor to choke a donkey.

Our favorite was Dynamite Fishing.

Starry Night

It’s a pastel night filled with warm glowing stars. And one bubble.

Today’s game, Starry Night, isn’t a grimhearted endeavor. It’s serene, tranquil time spent juggling a star. With a bubble. Use your mouse to move the bubble around. Gently, very gently, use the bubble to keep the yellow star in play by bouncing the star on the bubble. If you can bounce the yellow star through the blue falling stars, you’ll receive points. If your yellow star drops off the bottom of the screen, or if you fail to light up any of the falling stars before they drop off the screen, your energy bar will be reduced. When the energy bar is depleted, the game will end.

Starry Night is a simple game made into something more with its solid gameplay and charming storybook art. While not the most intense game you’ll ever play, we found this game agreeably compelling and had a fine time bouncing a star on a bubble.

Pubfight: The Bar

Today we’re taking you to the place where everyone knows your name - the local pub. Well. To be honest, few will know your name and it’s a computer simulation of a pub. Okay. We won’t try to mislead you. No one will know your name.

Accurately serving rickety beer and anemic wine is your sole purpose in Pubfight: The Bar. There are three bars, and each has a bartender you control. Customers will enter from each side of the screen. You have to serve them their drinks. Don’t make a mistake, because these patrons are finicky and will react harshly if they receive the incorrect beverage. That is to say that the slurring clientele will paste the bartender who failed in his duty!

Harrowing. That’s the word we would use to describe Pubfight: The Bar. Slinging servings to three layers of promptly approaching customer hordes takes quick reflexes and accurate fingers.

You won’t need coffee to perk you up after a few frantic rounds of this game.

Mystery At Mansfield Manor

Wednesday. The villainous, Norman Batesian hump day. A perfect day to tell you about a murder mystery that’s waiting to challenge your deductive skills.

Mystery at Mansfield Manor is an interactive movie in which you’re given the role of a detective who is trying to solve a murder case. It’s like playing a part in a movie. A movie in which what you do determines the course of the film. You’re not trapped on a predetermined path; the game doesn’t drag you to the end. You guide the path of your investigation in this whodunit. The game will take a few hours to solve, but you have four days to crack the case.

This game may not appeal to a lot of gamers - it’s not an alien blasting action game, but we think crime and mystery lovers will enjoy the experience immensely. The game isn’t free, but it’s cheaper than buying an Agatha Christie paperback. We recommend that you have a broadband connection before trying to playing. This is an interactive experience that’s beyond the ken of mere dial-up.

Find Mulch

As you may well know, most dwarves look alike. They’re nearly identical. However the funky little fellows are different enough in one way for someone to smell the difference between them.

Find Mulch takes the stale game of Concentration and makes it… um… fresh. Rather than LOOKING for differences between the similarly countenanced characters, you LISTEN for the differences. All of the dwarves except one has a tempestuous sound that he shares with one other dwarf. Your job is to try to match the stout windbags with their partners in your search for Mulch. Matched gassers will exit the screen, reducing the number of fragrant characters remaining. Keep going until you’ve eliminated all but Mulch.

Okay. So the game is somewhat crude. Once you get past that however, you can enjoy a unique game of Concentration and appreciate the wonderful graphics and animation. Players who have read the excellent Artemis Fowl series will appreciate the character of Mulch Diggums more than players who haven’t.

Dare we say it? Yes, we dare. This game is a gas.
