Lord Of The Rings: Conquest Coming
Pandemic Studios, an award-winning developer of blockbuster video games, is proud to announce the development of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, PC, and Nintendo DS platforms. Pandemic Studios is a division of Electronic Arts Inc.
In a partnership with New Line Cinema, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is an action-packed game created by the same Pandemic Studios team behind the best-selling Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II titles. Set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” universe as depicted by the Academy Award-winning films, players will finally fight the entirety of these epic battles any way they want. In addition to crusading as the heroic forces of good, for the first time ever in a ‘The Lord of the Rings’ action title they’ll conquer Middle-earth while playing as the legions of Sauron’s evil army, including Cave-trolls, Oliphaunts, the Balrog, and Sauron himself. The game is set for a global release in fall 2008.
“Our Pandemic Studios creative teams have years of expertise bringing giant battlefields to life,” says Andrew Goldman, Pandemic Studios co-founder and general manager. “We’ve always wanted to harness our experience in a fantasy universe with warriors, archers, mages and castle sieges. Of course, there is truly no better fantasy world to recreate than the enormity of Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ realm.”
“We’ll freely admit that we’re rabid fans of The Lord of the Rings fantasy,” says Josh Resnick, co-founder and general manager at Pandemic Studios. “Our experience creating massive, rich, action-packed games means that The Lord of the Rings: Conquest will give fans exactly what they want: full control of the blade, bow and magic to fight its epic battles any way they want — even if they choose to play from the evil side.”
“We are thrilled to be working with Pandemic Studios on this game,” commented David Imhoff, Senior EVP of Worldwide Licensing & Merchandising for New Line Cinema. “They bring not only their incredible technical and creative abilities but also a great passion for The Lord of the Rings.”
The world premiere of game footage and the first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Conquest will premiere exclusively on Spike TV’s GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley on Friday, June 20.
This announcement reveals the third blockbuster video game project in the works at Pandemic Studios’ Los Angeles-based headquarters alongside the upcoming Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and Saboteur, both in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms. More Xbox 360 Tips
Yesterday, Hai-Shuo Shu gave us some great advice for extending the life of your Xbox 360. To reiterate some of these points and present a few more, Gnomie Alex Harwood writes:
Hey, Chris! This email isn’t asking for you help but it is a top five list about how to avoid the red ring of death.
- The most obvious one: don’t buy an Xbox 360! If you’re that worried about getting the red ring of death, then just avoid it altogether and go for the PS3.
- Don’t play your Xbox too long! This is the mistake I made (by playing over 100 matches online on Halo 3). I realized about five hours had gone by and a few days later my Xbox was just sitting there blinking red at me. Just play it for short bursts — about an hour or two — you’re probably less likely to get the red ring of death.
- Leave a gap between the back of the console and the wall; letting the air flow into your console is crucial to keeping it cool.
- Dont buy an intercooler. According to sources on the Internet, they not only don’t work but shorten the life of your console. Just save your money and buy a new game.
- Keep it cool. Don’t keep your Xbox in a hot room or a room that is prone to being hot; this just increases the chance of overheating your Xbox. Also, keep the airflow moving in your room to reach your Xbox.
Extending The Life Of Your Xbox 360
Gnomie Hai-Shuo Shu writes:
Hi there Chris!
I thought I would share a few tips on how to extend the life of the Xbox 360, and possibly stave off the onset of the various “rings of death” issues. I don’t know if you already have a list like this; I’ve tried Googling Pirillo AND Xbox 360, but I haven’t seen any videos on this so hopefully I’m not repeating something you’ve gone over and over again!
Okay, so what are the tips?
- Your 360 is a delicate piece of equipment. It really is. Think of it in this manner: if you wouldn’t do it to the tower of your PC, don’t do it to your 360, because that’s essentially what it is — albeit a PC that only places games on DVDs that only the Xbox 360 can read. But the basic principle remains: it’s as fragile as your PC and so should be treated as such. I’ve never seen anyone just toss the tower of their PC into their trunk or the back seat of their car like a sack of potatoes. But I see that all the time with the Xbox 360. Don’t do that! Shock and dust are two of the biggest killers of electronics. May I suggest getting some kind of travel bag for your 360 if you intend to move it a lot? A low-tech way is to simply wrap it with a towel, which will mitigate at least some of the shocks it’ll get being bumped about in your car. And just because you placed it gently in your trunk doesn’t mean it will remain unperturbed for the entirety of the journey. Anything could happen: you may have to come to a sudden stop. Or perhaps make a sudden turn, or perhaps hit a road bump. Any of these things could cause your console to receive a possibly fatal blunt-force shock.
- Don’t move your 360 when it’s trying to read a disk. This will possibly cause the console to at best not read properly, at worst scratch your disk. Movement causes microshocks to the system; you can never truly move it in a smooth fashion. Your hands will always shake somewhat, and the disk reader is based on a laser sensitive to even the slightest of shocks. Besides, why would you WANT to move your console when it’s reading a disk anyway? Just don’t do it, trust me.
- Keep the console in a horizontal position. Now some people will argue this point, but especially if you happen to have a carpeted floor, the best position for your console is horizontal, and here is why. On the bottom end of your console (if held vertically) is a huge vent. This vent is one of the several places that the Xbox 360 releases air heated by its CPU and GPU (Central Processing Unit and Graphical Processing Unit). It also happens to be the largest vent, and thus if you were to place it horizontally (and especially on a carpet), that vent would be blocked. The hot air would have nowhere to go but straight back into your system, where it could and probably would play havoc on the electronics inside. Heat is one of the biggest suspected causes of the dreaded Red Rings of Death, and nobody wants to see that. Maintain the 360 in the vertical position at your peril!
- Dust is the enemy of all electronics. Your PC doesn’t like it and neither does your Xbox 360. Those huge vents that allow hot air to escape the console also allow dust to enter, and after a few months (depending on location) the insides of your 360 may have a nice carpet of dust. What dust does is trap heat between itself and whatever is directly below it, rather like a blanket. This trapped heat, unable to escape, increases the ambient temperature inside your console, and we all know what that means. Red Rings of Death often ensue, followed by tears and gnashing of teeth. There really isn’t any way to truly remove ALL the dust from your console short of opening it up and voiding your warranty, but you can remove a decent amount by purchasing a can of compressed air. Blow the air gently into the vents of the console (do it at an angle, please, and not directly in, because if you blow into the vents too hard you might damage something). This should clear much of the dust that has clogged your system and has the added advantage of also clearing the vents, which are probably also clogged with dust by now.
- Keep the brick well-ventilated. The “brick” is the huge power unit of the Xbox 360. Unlike its cousin the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 has an external power unit, and man is it big. This thing needs its oxygen though, because if it doesn’t get it you might get something called the “Four Red Rings of Death.” It’s similar in nature to the more popular “Red Rings of Death,” except it’s four quadrants instead of three. Be that as it may, the fact remains that a red quadrant is never a good thing, no matter how many there are. Four red lights means “A/V failure.” In other words the Xbox 360 isn’t getting enough power. Try reconnecting the Xbox 360 to the wall socket after ventilating your brick for a few minutes. If that doesn’t help… well… call Microsoft.
Under most ordinary circumstances, the Xbox 360 is a fairly rugged machine. It’s not the tank that the PlayStation 3 is, but it can usually withstand the rigors of daily use. As long as you don’t mistreat your console, it shouldn’t have a problem — and if it does you have the comfort of the one-year warranty of the machine, plus the three-year warranty specifically for the “Red Rings of Death” issue. Chances are you won’t get the red rings, but in case you do, may I suggest you get a store warranty when you purchase the console? The benefit of such a warranty is that usually the store will replace your defective console immediately, whereas Microsoft has been known to take days, weeks, or even months to ship replacements back. I hope that these tips will help a few people extend the life of their Xbox 360s. After all, none of us like the idea of a $380 paperweight!

Xbox 360 Kiosks Bring Games And Entertainment To Children’s Hospitals
Microsoft Corp. today announced a new partnership with the Companions in Courage Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families who are overcoming life-threatening obstacles. As part of its commitment to providing fun, interactive entertainment for children, Microsoft is supplying hundreds of Xbox 360 game kiosks to playrooms in children’s hospitals across the United States, intended to provide a respite for young patients and be a catalyst for fun. In addition to select games, movies and television content, the Xbox 360 kiosks will provide access to a private network that allows hospitalized children across the country to play games and chat in a safety-enhanced environment over Xbox Live, the world’s largest social network connected to television.
Microsoft is celebrating this partnership and the installation of the first wave of kiosks with three simultaneous events today at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center of Seattle and the Children’s Hospital of Orange County in California. Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, will attend the Seattle event to commemorate the first group of Xbox 360 kiosks and the launch of the special Xbox Live network.
“Microsoft is committed to keeping kids entertained in a variety of ways within a safer gaming environment, so partnering with Companions in Courage to offer children in hospitals a way to connect through something as universal as games is a natural fit for the work we do,” Bach said. “The goal for this program is to give these kids a chance to have some fun and just be kids.”
Companions in Courage founder and National Hockey League Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine said, “Entertainment, creativity and personal connections can be important factors in alleviating some of the isolation and discomfort these children experience each day. Xbox 360 offers young patients a fun escape through games, TV shows, movies and positive interactions with others over the Xbox Live network. These gaming stations are a perfect complement to the interactive playrooms.”
The customized and hospital-friendly Xbox 360 kiosks are pre-loaded with a variety of Y-rated TV programs, G-rated movies, games rated E and E10+, as well as Xbox 360 Headset and Xbox Live Vision Camera capabilities, which enable patients to communicate over a dedicated Xbox Live network. This network, created just for Xbox 360 kiosks and consoles in children’s hospitals, allows patients to play games over Xbox Live, but limits chat via voice, text and video to only those children playing from select hospitals across the country. The industry-leading parental controls on Xbox 360, known as Family Settings, will be used to help restrict access to content outside ratings parameters, as well as the times during which patients can use the kiosks or consoles.
“It’s extremely gratifying to witness the joy and excitement of these children and teens when they have a chance to break away from the normal hospital routine, and make new friends while playing video games,” said Cynthia Sparer, executive director of Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. “We are grateful that our partnership with Companions in Courage helps us meet the needs of our patients and allows kids to be kids even when they’re sick.”
To help bring even more Xbox 360 kiosks to children’s hospitals across the country, individuals can visit the Companions in Courage Web site to make a donation.

Top 5 List On How To Act On Xbox Live
Hey Chris, I’m a new member and I just registered. My nick in the chat is “MacNCheese.” I decided to send in a Top 5 list; this is for all the gamers that play on Xbox Live.
- The number one tip on how to act on Xbox Live is treat people with respect. Just because they have a different accent, have a higher or deeper voice, or are from a different part of the world, don’t make fun of them or tell them they suck just because of that.
- Every time you get a medal, complete a challenge, or unlock an achievement, you don’t have to tell everyone. Imagine this: you’re playing Xbox 360, and every half a minute or so you hear someone say “OH, DOUBLE KILL, BABY!” or “I JUST UNLOCKED EXPERT III! I OWN!” Yeah, it gets annoying, so don’t do it.
- In shooting games like Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3, don’t complain that the only reason you got killed by a person was because they were using a “noobie” or “cheap” weapon. In my opinion, there’re no noobie or cheap guns, because all guns are in the game for a reason. If they help kill people, why not use them?
- After winning a match against another team, don’t brag about how badly you beat them. Just a simple “good game” will do.
- When you’re using your headset, don’t sing or don’t play loud music so everyone can hear it. It gets really annoying, and to be honest, it does NOT make you seem cool.

Available for 800 Microsoft Points exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, this second major downloadable content offering includes three new multiplayer maps, as well as a bevy of new Forge options.
Avalanche and Blackout revive two fan-favourite maps from previous “Halo” games, while Ghost Town welcomes desolate jungle combat to the experience. And now, using new options in the Forge, players can create more detailed challenges and map variants than ever, while also utilizing a variety of visual effects to create new, unique screenshots and saved films.
Avalanche is a throwback all the way to “Halo: Combat Evolved.” This snowy battlefield was inspired by the original Sidewinder, but the massive, vehicle-oriented objective map adds a twist to its classic predecessor with all new interiors, dramatically reshaped exteriors and brand new vehicle variants. Admire the view from above, as Avalanche also marks the arrival of the Hornet to “Halo 3” multiplayer.
In keeping with the theme of “fan-favourites,” Blackout will fill the void left by fans of “Halo 2’s” Lockout. Although fully re-visualized, this map adheres very faithfully to the tightly wound perfection of the original, but eschews Forerunner architecture in favour of industrial human design. Blackout is perfect for fans of small battleground Slayer matches.
The Legendary Map Pack also packs a brand new punch, in addition to the two classics, with Ghost Town – a battle-scarred maze of narrow passages and dangerous ruins. Collapsed ceilings and shell-battered buildings provide both valuable cover and deadly traps, as catwalks and stairways take the fight from claustrophobic ground combat to dizzying rooftop battles. Ghost Town is a mid-sized map ideal for Team Slayer games and smaller, objective types.
As an added bonus, for a limited time only, gamers who purchase the Legendary Map Pack will receive a four month subscription to “Bungie PRO” via Xbox LIVE. Bungie PRO greatly expands the Halo 3 experience by increasing the maximum number of file share storage slots from six to twenty-four while also increasing the total file storage size to 250MB. This will allow players to upload and share more films, maps, screenshots and game-types than ever before.
After downloading the new maps, gamers can register on Xbox LIVE for the “Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack Play & Win Sweepstakes” for their chance to win great prizes including a “Halo 3” Edition console, Halo ActionClix: Scarab Vehicle Pack, a complete set of “Halo 3” Series 1 Action Figures from McFarlane Toys, nearly one million MS Points and much more. Click here for more details.
The maps of the Legendary Map Pack are available in matchmaking today to those who have purchased the download. Additionally, fans that have yet to purchase the Heroic Map Pack, which released in December, can now download it for free on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

A Collection of Micro Games Based on Popular Cartoon Series “Rocky and Bullwinkle” Comes to Xbox Live Arcade Along With Atari’s Classic “Battlezone” This Wednesday!
There’s a new addition to the family of party games available on Xbox 360™! “Rocky and Bullwinkle” is available exclusively on Xbox Live® Arcade, along with an enhanced version of the tank vs. tank action classic “Battlezone” this Wednesday, 16th April, at 09.00.
Based on the popular US cartoon series of the 1960s, “Rocky and Bullwinkle” on Xbox Live Arcade is a fast and fun party experience packed with more than 100 micro games. Eight playable characters from Frostbite Falls are back in the living room, including Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris, Natasha, Dudley Do-Right and many more. “Rocky and Bullwinkle” features five difficulty settings, as well as support for up to 12 players in local hot-seat mode.
The game takes visual inspiration from the 1960s with a decidedly retro art style, but the fun is as modern as it gets. In fact, those who want to get up and move will enjoy 25 micro games that work with the Xbox Live Vision Camera. By moving around and expressing gestures - like rowing a boat or throwing darts - players can control the action in the game!
“Battlezone” on Xbox Live Arcade adds exciting new multiplayer modes for up to two players both locally and over Xbox Live, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Plus, players can use the Xbox Live Vision Cam to challenge opponents on the battle field. Combine these features with new special effects for weapon firing, impacts and explosions and this revamped version of “Battlezone” is a must-have classic that fans and newcomers will enjoy.
To score points in “Battlezone,” players must shoot and destroy the enemy’s brigade including a standard enemy tank, supertank and a flying saucer.
Developed by Zen Studios, “Rocky and Bullwinkle” will be available worldwide for 800 Microsoft Points.

Unique Age Of Conan PvP Weekend
15,000 gamers get exclusive Age of Conan access from April 18th to April 20th.
Eidos and Funcom is proud to announce a unique Beta partnership with GameSpot.com, one of the world’s biggest gaming Web sites. In a highly exclusive event, 15,000 gamers from across the world can log in and play Age of Conan, non-stop, from Friday April 18th to Sunday April 20th. The unique PvP weekend allows lucky gamers to test a limited part of the PvP functionality of Age of Conan, and the two different PvP mini-games, Capture the Skull and Team Annihilation, will be available.
To make the weekend even more interesting Eidos and Funcom also includes the engaging Age of Conan character creation system, allowing players to create avatars with strong personalities. All 12 classes in the game, including the barbarian, can be picked and tested, with Funcom transforming each character into a fully specced level 20 death machine. In PvP lobbies players can then chat and socialize, prior to entering PvP matches. Participants are urged to test different classes, and offer any feedback on the forums. There will also be forums on GameSpot.com where people can talk about the event, and Funcom staff will be present to gather feedback.
“The battlefields of Hyboria are craving new, fresh blood,” says an enthusiastic Game Director/Producer Gaute Godager at Funcom. “Throwing newcomers into a fully specced level 20 PVP character is naturally a challenge in this most unforgiving of all MMO environments, but I am confident the players will rise to this challenge. We have spent years fine-tuning the combat system in Age of Conan, and allowing GameSpot readers to be the first to get a small glimpse of this is something we really look forward to.”
The unique PvP weekend marks an escalation in the stress testing for Age of Conan, and aspiring barbarians can now sign up on GameSpot’s Web site. The 15.000 lucky winners will be then contacted by email on Wednesday the 16th of April, and then they can then start downloading the game. The servers open at 1600 EST Friday the 18th of April and close at 1600 EST on Sunday the 20st of April. Funcom would like to point out that the PvP weekend is still a part of the beta testing process, and that it is a part of the planned stress test escalations towards launch. As of such it is not fully representative of the final product, and players are asked to treat it accordingly. Stress traffic issues may therefore occur.
Age of Conan is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated PC games in development. It has received more than twentyfive covers on high-profile gaming magazines across the globe and more than fifteen major awards, including numerous “Best MMO of E3″ awards and the official “Best Online Game” award at the Games Convention 2007. Age of Conan is a key title in Microsoft’s Games for Windows line-up, and a showcase title for nVidia. The game is set to launch in several territories on May 20th, 2008.
For more information on Age of Conan — either in English, German, French or Spanish — visit the official Web site where you also can access the respective community Web sites.

Ikaruga to Grace Xbox Live Arcade This Week
The Japanese arcade hit “Ikaruga” receives the full Xbox Live Arcade treatment and is poised to launch on the platform this Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 a.m. PDT).
Ikaruga is a fast-paced scrolling shooter with a twist; players must constantly switch their ship’s polarity to maximize their damage output and avoid incoming enemy fire of the opposite polarity.
Ikaruga on Xbox Live Arcade features a two-player co-op mode both locally and over Xbox Live. Newcomers can also easily bring their skill up to speed by using the game’s slow motion training mode.
Ikaruga is a perfect combination of beautiful, manga-style storytelling and challenging arcade heroics, all brought to life in a gorgeous HD environment.
Gamers itching to obtain a moment of Ikaruga glory will be wise to master the chaining system that detects when enemies of the same polarity are destroyed consecutively. Doing so will reward players with huge score bonuses, which will be key to topping Ikaruga’s leaderboards.
The ability to relive a particularly harrowing battle is also possible thanks to the game’s record and replay function, which is new to the Xbox Live Arcade version of the game.
From the Japanese developer Treasure, Ikaruga will be available worldwide for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. Click here for more details on Ikaruga.
