While sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 have tripled in North America since the price drop and Black Friday, moving 322,000 units. Nintendo, during the same period, moved over 1 million units - the big N’s best ever week in the US.
George Harrison, the outgoing vice president of corporate communicated at NOA, commented that “As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday-spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family. The Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family,” including families that have to compete “with higher gas prices and fuel costs.”
Reggie Fils-Aime commented on the supply shortage that has plagued Nintendo since the Wii was released least year: “At this point, we are literally trying to catch up with demand. People aren’t going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times. It is literally a missed opportunity [to make a sale].” so, in addition to nearly-obscene sales numbers, Nintendo is still suffering from hardware shortages.
In other words: don’t expect to be able to walk into Best Buy on Christmas Eve and expect to pick up a Wii.
(In fact, don’t expect to get one on Amazon.com either: the cheapest Wii is going for over $500, and that’s not even a bundle package; ouch.)

I bought my daughter a Wii about a month ago at Futureshop because they had a sale special going on… she is not getting it until christmas however.
My girlfriends brother has one of the FIRST ones and whenever we visit my daughter loves to play. Reading all the pre-christmas hype, I knew the Wii would be sold out basically everywhere… it IS the best family console out there…
Considering it’s physical interactibility, it is, even before Wii Fit comes out, the best for the winter douldrums, meaning it has enough to partially simulate outside activities, you HAVE to get up and do things, unlike the rest of the consoles, which basically have you sit down and mash buttons.
