Speaking for myself, I think trying to pick out the best games of 2005 is a tricky thing to do. Then again, so was trying to play most of these same games…
It was a thumb-numbing year for video gamers. Not only did we witness the launch of two new major platforms — the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation Portable — but the industry also saw a number of extraordinary titles for all platforms and age groups.
The following is a look at some of the best video games of 2005.
If you could only buy one action-adventure gameMovies may get worse with each sequel, but video games — such as Capcom’s www.capcom.com) coveted “Resident Evil” series –tend to get better with age. “Resident Evil 4” for the Nintendo GameCube and Sony PlayStation 2 ($40; rated “Mature”) is a cinematic action game starring a U.S. government operative sent to a mysterious European village to rescue the president’s daughter. Gore notwithstanding, this scary sequel combines atmospheric environments, smooth control and dozens of hours of white-knuckle game play.
Runners-up: “God of War” (Sony Computer Entertainment America; for PS2), “Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories” (Rockstar Games; for PSP) and “Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie” (Ubisoft; for all platforms). [Read the rest]
