Asheron’s Last Call

Jeffrey Anderson, CEO of Turbine entertainment, announced that Asheron’s Call 2 will no cease service on December 30, 2005. In a letter on the official website, he wrote:

“In spite of our hard work and the launch of [Asheron's Call 2 expansion pack] Legions, AC2 has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to continue the service. We will be officially closing the Asheron’s Call 2 service on 12/30/05. Until then, we plan to run live events, but we will not be adding any content or features.”

According to an article on GameSpot, AC2 is no longer profitable, so it does not make any sense for the company to continue to run the service. Fans of the series have expressed everything from remorse for the soon-to-be-dead service, to anger against the company.

Despite this announcement, there are no signs that Asheron’s Call 1 will be cancelled. Turbine’s directory of community relations (known as Calandryll on the AC forums) has said that there are no plans to shut down AC1 “at this time. Obviously I can’t predict the future, but AC1 is in a very different situation than AC2 and it is our intention to continue supporting AC1.”
