GameTap Exposes Itself

GameTap, the broadband-only PC-based game delivery service, will debut at $14.95 on October 3.

The service will emulate a variety of platforms including the Atari 2600, Intellivision, Genesis, 32X, Game Gear, Sega Master System, Dreamcast, Playstation, JAMMA arcade cabinets, and much more. The service will also allow you to play PC games.

Available on the service right now are Ubisoft’s Rayman 3, Beyond Good & Evil, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Worms Blast, and others. PC games are downloaded into a cache on your PC. Once you download the game access is quick and easy.

The service is expected to launch with 300 games, but Turner has acquired a license for over 1,000 games, with a goal to roll out 5 to 10 news games every week; but, games will not be hitting store shelves and GameTap at the same time, as developers are more likely to release games to retail before they release to the service, but the developers hope to change that.

GameTap will have parental controls – which would allow parents to lock their children out of any individual game.

The service is currently in beta testing, but looks to be on track to hit their release date.
