My Opinion on Hot Coffee

So, politicians from Australia, to California and New York, as well as parental activists groups are screaming at the top of their lungs about the “Hot Coffee” mod for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Why are they upset?

By default, the game does not show the act of sex in the game, it is hidden behind the doors of a car or a bedroom. A 32 year old dutch gamer released a modification, called Hot Coffee, which claims to simply unlock a sexual mini-game where you control the main character while he … takes care of business.

What are they doing about it?

Most of the parental groups are calling on the ESRB to repeal their decision, and grant GTA:SA an Adults Only (AO) rating, so parents can properly judge the game for its content based on the rating system. They claim that ESRB was wrong in their rating because the mini-game, which cannot be played in the game without the download of an additional tool, should be enough to warrant an AO rating.

Politicians are calling on their governments to regulate the gaming industry. In Australian, they’re attempting to not only restrict the sales of video games to minors, but also restrict their imports. Meanwhile, in the united States, Assemblyman Yee, and Senator Clinton are trying to push legislation forward that will legally restrict the sales of video games to minors. Senator Clinton is also trying to get the FTC to review GTA:SA and determine if there is anything they will do about it.
