GameSpot Complete members are now getting to beta test the GameCenter serivce.
“The GameCenter service lets online gamers interact with one another through several online games, including the popular first-person shooters Counter-Strike: Source and Unreal Tournament 2004. GC provides connection to PC games with hosted lag-free servers, as well as provides stat-tracking leaderboards, team management, sponsored tournaments and events, and more.”
According to the website, it’s basically a game hosting service with some extra oomph: they’ll have full statistics tracking, competition ladders, and online community building - all lag free.
What’s unknown is how they’re going to guarantee the “lag free” aspect of the service. Although, if you consider the nature of the Internet, the only part of the lag free service they could guarantee - short of providing a dedicated T1 to every subscriber - is on the server end.
It sounds promising, especially for those who cannot get a dedicated server without paying. Hopefully a server wont cost an arm and a leg.
