Great Cheap Games: Fusion Frenzy

Fuzion Frenzy, for the Xbox, is a party game – similar to Mario Party – that contains forty-five – mostly unique and fun – mini-games. With so much variety, you’re bound to fall in love with – and hate – some games. The joy in having a game like this is the variety that it offers you, so that you and your buddies won’t get bored after ten minutes. Of course, with big hits come big misses.
This game, for all of its multiplayer entertainment is simply boring without friends. The AI is laughably easy to conquer, and wont hold your interest for longer than a few hours. And, once you’ve mastered the AI there is very little replay value without your friends. Also, the voiceovers are a bit painful because of their constant repetition. So, it brings the single-player experience down another level that it didn’t deserve to be at.
With that out of the way: this game is damn fun. All of the games are based around besting your friends, with most objectives being killing your opponent. Of course, some games aren’t going to hold your interest (bug squashing? WTF), while other games will be played more often than not.
The graphics in this game are outstanding. The environments are crisp and clean, and the colors are bright and sharp – perfect for a party game. Fuzion Frenzy has a fixed camera, but it will zoom in and out so that every player is on the screen at the same time.
The physics in the mini-games – especially the ones where you control a vehicle of some sort – are fantastic. The controls are smooth, fluid, and react in a way that you would expect. Some of the controls are a bit difficult to get used to – like controlling the bumper-car boats – but, for the most part, this game is easy to just pick up and play.
A great feature of this game is the various loading screens, which tell you what each button on the controller does, so everyone doesn’t have to read a manual in order to know how to play. It’s a really minor feature, but makes Fuzion Frenzy that much more of a spectacular party game.
Another small – but great – feature is that Fuzion Frenzy allows you to play your ripped music straight from the Xbox hard drive. Again, this isn’t a great selling point, but once you get tired of the audio, you can put on some different music that all of your friends can get into. It’s another one of those small details that makes this game so much better.
Overall, this is an excellent party game. The single-player is lame, but this game was obviously designed from the ground-up to be a multiplayer experience. Great and entertaining mini-games and simple add-ons - like instructional load screens and the ability to play your own music – make this a game you must add to your Xbox collection.
