Nintendo, What are you Doing?

First thing’s first: Nintendo is a profitable company, and has posted a profit on its hardware (consoles and handhelds) since the inception of the NES. They have a strong business model, and even if their next generation console sells just as poorly as the Gamecube, they will still be able to put out another console.
With that being said, I just don’t understand what Nintendo is trying to accomplish. Their press conference left me under-whelmed. Even the amazing “Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” trailer could not save the day for me. The problem? Nintendo keeps sending American gamers mixed signals.
Last year, Nintendo said it was all about “kicking ass” and that it would target the adult gamer. Well, they haven’t done that. Instead of the next greatest FPS or stealth action game, we get piles of trash like Mario Party 6, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and Nintendogs. Even at the press conference, we get games like Pokemon XD, Mario Mix, Mario Baseball, and Donkey Konga 2.
The adult gamers in Japan may buy that garbage, but that same game does not fit the wants, needs, or desires of gamers not located on that isolated island. Until they learn that American gamers are not Japanese then sales in the States will continue to be lackluster at best.
Sony is the only company that’s going to be doing the ass kicking, globally, because they understand that a gamers mentality here is, far and away, much different than a gamers mentality in Japan or Europe. Until Nintendo learns that lesson, they’ll continue to be #3 in the United States.
