We obtained access to the Nintendo Press Conference (thanks to a buddy and a Wi-Fi connection), and it looks like Nintendo might be a bigger dog than previously thought. The Revolution is a small, sleek little console that packs a punch, and the entire Nintendo library will be available for download to be played on the Revolution. Read on for more!
First up: there will be a new Game Boy, entitled the Game Boy Micro. It will be a just a hair larger than the iPod mini, and it’s coming out this fall. It is not a successor to the DS or GBA, but “an extension of portable play.” It will be customizable with face plates.
The Nintendo Revolution makes its debut, and is roughly the size of a Mac Mini; however, it will actually be smaller by the time it ships to retailers. It is backwards compatible with Gamecube games, and uses DVD media for its own games. It will have an attachment that will allow it to play DVD movies. Every controller for the Revolution will be wireless. Also, the system has an SD memory card slot, 2 USB 2.0 ports, and comes with 512MB of internal flash memory for storage, instead of a hard drive.
“When you turn on Revolution and see the graphics, you will say ‘wow!’ Our competitors have detailed the power of their core processor and display. But the advantages of our technology will also have no bearing on game play. I know, this is one of those mysterious comments,” Iwata stated.
If I may speculate, it’s possible that the graphics and logic are separated internally. Thus, you could have beautiful graphics without sacrificing gameplay.
Everything from Nintendo will focus on WiFi connectivity, including the Revolution launch title: Smash Brothers.
“Miyamoto is challenging his teams to create something new,” which will debut with Revolution. The classic franchises will all be there, including Mario and Zelda.
Iwata expects strong third-party support for Revolution; for example, Square Enix is already working on Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for Revolution.
The Revolution is a “virtual console” which can download 20 years of content, via an online marketplace. ou will be able to download, to an SD card, NES, Super NES, N64, and Gamecube games. You can get every Nintendo game ever made; but, there was no word on pricing.
Take special note that he stated “every Nintendo game” - not every game made for Nintendo. So classic games, such as Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, and Mega Man may not be available; however, I would not be surprised if third parties signed on for this service.
A ton of games were announced, including Batallion Wars, Pokemon XD, Super Mario Strikers, Mario Baseball, Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, Mario Party 7, Fire Emblem, Geist, Killer 7, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Donkey Konga 2, Incredible Hulk 2, Madagascar, Madden NFL 06, One Piece, Scooby Doo, Spartan, Strikers, WWE Day of Reckoning 2, Harvest Moon, Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball, Shadow the Hedgehog, Midway Arcade, and Medal of Honor.
In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess trailer, Link turns into a wolf. Nothing else was explained. Guess we’ll have to wait for E3, or the games release.
As an aside: the crowd went nuts when the trailer played, making it difficult to hear the audio.
In an odd ending to the press conference, Eiji Aonuma pulled the Zelda trailer out on a DS cart and did the Zelda chime. It then ended with Reggie saying “be prepared to let your right brain run wild.”
