Some Details on the Nintendo Revolution

IGN is reporting that some new details on Nintendo’s next console, code-named Revolution, has been released in a recent New York Times article. In it, Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan states that the system is “very, very sleek,” stands horizontally, and is no larger than three DVD cases stacked on top of each other, which would make this system smaller (in width) than the Mac mini computers.
The report also states that the Revolution will be able to play DVD media, but it is unknown if this will be regular movies, or if games will be released on this DVD media. Also, the Revolution will have WiFi out of the box, be able to “regularly go online,” and is backwards compatible with the Gamecube. Finally, the standard controllers will be wireless, which is no surprise given the huge popularity of wireless controllers.
I’m a little concerned here, since this sounds a lot like the new Playstation 2 units, minus the WiFi. Both the Playstation 2 and X-Box played DVDs, and supported games on DVD media, so Nintendo may actually be behind a generation when it comes to media distribution.
