This financial report by AFX on Yahoo suggests that the French government will intervene to prevent Electronic Arts, who recently bought 20% of Ubisoft, from acquiring more of the company. The report also states that the EA’s recent purchase has been considered by Ubisoft as “unsolicited” and “hostile”, with the Guillemot family increasing their interest in the company to fend off any other advances by EA.
On a related note, Gamespot has posted an interview with Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, who speaks his mind on the EA purchase. Here’s a bit:
GS: What about the long-term outlook?
YG: When looking at the longer-term, our only concern is the risk that we may not be allowed to fully realize our vocation of being creators of high quality games. Our goal is to create the best games available, and our teams are motivated and love what they do because they see that this is the key to their success. Our philosophy has been to change the terms of success in this industry, so that a successful game is one that is innovative and creative.
