Duke Nukem Forever NOT Using Doom3 Tech

A recent story on Shacknews.Com reveals, from George Broussard himself, that the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever is NOT using Doom 3 technology. George Broussard claims that Gamespot was incorrect in their original story, stating that Doom 3 tech is being use for Duke Nukem Forever. Apparently Duke Nukem Forever’s publisher made the mistake of telling Gamespot incorrect information and Broussard was not able to correct the article in time. According to this post on the Shacknews forums, Duke Nukem Forever is using its own engine, written from scratch.

News of a new engine is quite exciting. I am eager to see screenshots or content, when 3D Realms decides to be generous enough to provide some. At the same time, I can’t help but be curious at which point they decided to move to make their own engine and exactly why. The history of Duke Nukem Forever is full of sudden changes, moving from the Quake engine to the Unreal engine and now to their own engine. Such changes definitely shed light onto the exceedingly long development time for the game, as a change of engines, especially the development of an engine, can take a huge amount of time. Duke Nukem Forever’s extremely long development time, however, has earned itself a reputation as being vaporware. While there is no doubt in my mind that the game will eventually be released, when it’s done of course, I do have nagging doubts as to whether or not it will be as amazing as everyone seems to expect. I remember another game that went through constant engine changes, suffered from ridiculous delays, had very high expectations from fans and was also coming from a top-name designer. The game was called Daikatana. Now, before you send ninjas to my humble home, in order to kill me in my sleep, please understand that I do hold a little more faith in 3D Realms than to directly compare Duke Nukem Forever to the blatant failure that was Daikatana. I do recognize similarities in their history, though. In the end, I’m hoping that Duke Nukem Forever is merely aged to perfection, rather than aged into a funky, mildew ridden and stinky conglomeration of recycled and constantly revised content.
