In a surprising note, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, plans to add working the overnight shift work as a possible cause for cancer. The American Cancer Socieity is right on their heals and plans on adding it to their lists as well.

The apparently problem is that working over night disrupts the bodys natural biological clock. The hormone melatonin is generally produced by our body at night, and that hormone suppresses tumor development.

With 20% of the population working over night shifts, espically in devoloping nations, is this one of the higher causes of cancer? That will be a while before any data is really ready. Most people that work over night, generally get used to it, and have a pattern to make it though the day and night working in different times, but with this possible news, will the amount of workers wanting to work over night drop?

On a personal side, Does it seem that everything causes cancer these days? Drinking Water, drinkign soda, drinking juice, breathing, going to school, useing a cell phone. All things that “cause cancer”. Perhaps its not really those activities, but something more deep in our DNA that is causeing the problem. Natural Selection does make an interesting case that its something with our DNA that is actually causing it. Hard to say, just my thoughts..

If you are like me, you tend to wait until the last minute to shop for Christmas, but also, you also never get stuff to the post office on time to get items from A to B on time. It looks like we are getting to the point that you are running out of time to get to the little ELF’s at the Post Office.

What it looks like..

Domestic mail: Send mail no later than Saturday for parcel post, Dec. 20 for first-class mail and priority mail, and Dec. 22 for express mail.

Military mail: For most military addresses, some holiday deadlines are still available. Priority mail should be sent no later than today and express mail by Dec. 18. All holiday deadlines have passed for Armed Forces Europe ZIP codes 093.

Deadlines for UPS/FedEx and DHL are usually more about how much you want to pay. Remember that usually ground packages are rated 5 to 7 business days.

If you haven’t turned your letter to Santa in yet, you will want to do that by the 18th to make sure it gets to the North Pole on time.

When in doubt about the time to mail the packages and cards for Christmas, send them early. Put a sticker of not to open until Christmas if you are really worried. Most people will wait for your requests.

Tips for dealing with the Postal Elf’s.

Have your packages ready to go and sealed when you get to the Post Office

Start the transaction with a smile and a nice greeting. (they will be more willing to help you out, if you are nice to them)

Write Clearly, or Type all addresses for your envelopes and packages.

Know that sending packages internationally, even to Canada tend to take a longer time than domestic letters.

Use Click ‘n Ship. It costs the same, and you save a trip to the Post. One of the Post Offices Elf’s will even come to your house to pick up the packages for free.

Understand that the Post Office will see 20 Billion Cards between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I hope you are able to get your packages and cards out on time.

Merry Christmas

I was reading an article about Michael Vick( The Atlanta QB thats sentenced to 23 months of jail time. There is no doubt in my mind that Vick is a great quarterback, as he even made the cover of a Madden game a few years ago, but with a team bringing in a person with such media spotlight, comes alot of negatives.

An interesting part of the whole thing, is that a larger market team, that is hurting, might be the best place for Vick to be. A small market team, would tear him apart with media questions and over every little action. Kinda like T.O. When he was with the Eagles, vs the Cowboys. Vick will be 30 years when he is out of jail and ready to play. Will the NFL keep him suspended? Probably not. Vick has already lost an estimated 140 million dollars from this whole deal. Perhaps the NFL will feel that he has severed his time and let him move on.

The odds of Atlanta wanting Vick back? Not in my eyes. I really think that I could see Vick playing for the 49′ers or a team that has not had great success lately, but isn’t that small market team, such as Green Bay. Even with Brett Farve likely retiring pretty soon, He doesn’t have that feel that would make him fit in Green Bay.

Where do you think Vick will end up?

We all know to use the best possible security choices when it comes to our computers. That means using WPA for Wifi (Wep.. yeah.. try again..), using ssl for online banking and other secure sites. Some of you might even go far enough to VPN to a central server to encrypt your data on an unsecured wifi connection. But what if someone was able to use a different approach. Hacking your wireless keyboard. Hack A Day had an article today about a group that was able to crack the security used by some Microsoft keyboards. Apparently the encryption isn’t all that hard to break. I thought it was an interesting read. Check it out.

. I know that most people don’t bring a wireless keyboard into a public location, such as a WiFi hot-spot, but, If you are in an office building, perhaps the person close to you, might be doing more than listening to your radio…

I’m not sure if you have been following whats been going on down in Venezuela, but its somewhat of a crazy thought. The citizens there are voting to possibly amend their constitution to allow Anti-American President Hugo Chavez to stay in power for life. Hugo Chavez isn’t a person that we really would want to be in power in a country like Venezuela. Granted they aren’t a major country as far as the world players go, they still are in an area that stability is a must.

President Chavez has gone as far as calling President Bush, the devil. This, itself, in today’s world really isn’t surprising, as it seems that a big group of nations and our own population aren’t the greatest fan of Bush. Perhaps the world would be more stable with out Chavez as a leader, perhaps we would be better with a new President here in America, the world doesn’t really know. What we do know, is how quickly ill fated words can reach and start a wild fire. In August of 2005, Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson, stated that the US should assassinate Chavez. Chavez viewed this as an official message of the American people, and the US government has been trying to dig out of that mess since then.

Is this something so worry about? I think it is. Having a truly Anti-American leader in a part of the world that we need stability, its slightly scary to me. Having new leadership in Venezuela, would likely help the world be more safe. At least in my eyes.

So, we finally got our first snowfall of the year here in Wisconsin, and it seems like a lot of people have forgotten how to drive. The first snowfall is always a fun ride, as everyone is gaining their winter feel of the roads again, but, really some people need to either drive faster, or find some other way to get around.

Its not really the people that are going fast that ,I think, cause accidents, but those that are going way too slow. I do agree that someone who is speeding does put others in danger, however, its the slow drivers who are putting the rest of us in danger.

I do have a few tips for winter that I hope might help some of you.

Turn your car on and let it warm up as you brush it off

Get your windows very clean, nothing worse than hitting someone because you didn’t see them

Know where you are going to go.

Sudden movements and turns are often the cause of accidents

Have an emergency kit in your car. Good items to have:

A Blanket

Some snacks and a candy bar

A shovel, and sand or kitty litter

Jumper cables or a jump start system

A candle and a tin can.

This will allow you to melt some snow, and drink it if you are stranded… cold snow is bad.

Bring your cell phone

Don’t use it if the roads are bad.

Turn on your headlights

They really do help people see you

Perhaps you have other winter items that you keep in your car if you are in a northern climate? Feel free to drop a comment for me, if its good, I can add them to the list.

For now, Done.
