BBC News reported that a Dutch teenager has been arrested for allegedly stealing 4,000 euros’ worth of virtual furniture from “rooms” in the social-networking site Habbo Hotel.
Interesting. How can someone steals a furniture in the virtual world? The furniture are actually just a compilation of codes and numbers. BBC reported:
It is a theft because the furniture is paid for with real money. But the only way to be a thief in Habbo is to get people’s usernames and passwords and then log in and take the furniture.
In 2005, a Chinese gamer was stabbed to death in a row over a sword in a game. Funny what people would do online. This things are getting worse. Somebody have to draw a line between virtual and reality.
A while ago, I have read that Second Life players involved in virtual child sex. Actually people can’t get arrested in the real world. Because they have to be at least at a legal age to register. But by imposing as a child online to have sex is immoral. Even though it is not real.
I don’t think that online, virtually is a place to commit real life crime. Not anywhere. Should there also be a judicial system online? And the punishment is also virtual? If the real legal system decides that it is a real crime, then someone will have to enforce it.
