Froot Loops Becomes a Recommended Food

Under the Smart Choices program to “identify smarter food and beverage choices“, Froot Loops is approved and has a green checkmark. That means that it is recommended as a Smart Choices product. You might be able to find this green checkmark program in your local stores now.

Some of the choices are drawing harsh criticism:

“… “These are horrible choices,” said Walter C. Willett, chairman of the nutrition department of the Harvard School of Public Health.

He said the criteria used by the Smart Choices Program were seriously flawed, allowing less healthy products, like sweet cereals and heavily salted packaged meals, to win its seal of approval. “It’s a blatant failure of this system and it makes it, I’m afraid, not credible,” Mr. Willett said.”

The Smart Choices program is an insult to the consumer. A brief glance at the content label a package of Froot Loops show how much sugar is part of the cereal. The unfortunate consequence of the Smart Choices program is that it undermines other more contentious efforts to inform the public and to improve nutritional choices.

Smart Choice program is made by Pepsi-Cola to rival the Health Check (real program made by heart association).

Under the Smart Choice program, Diet Coke is on the list as well as Cheese Wizz… as long as you have some fiber or some protein, it does not matter if they add a truck load of fat or artificial sugar.
