Allowing Guns on Campus

Whenever there is a shooting incident at an educational facility, there is discussion about whether staff and students should be armed. The proponents of having weapons at school present a simple argument. Allowing the staff and students to have weapons gives them a fighting chance if an attack should happen. Now there is legislation being presented in Texas to allow handguns on campus:

“… A bill filed by state Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland, and state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, would make Texas the second state to allow concealed handguns on college campuses. Eleven senators and 56 representatives have signed on as authors or co-authors.

Since 1996, Texans have had been able to carry concealed handguns, but they cannot carry at schools, in courts, polling places, race tracks or airports.”

On Sunday, there was a shooting attack at a church. An incomplete list of locations includes shopping malls, work places and so forth. Would the same argument apply that, for safety’s sake, people should be armed for their own protection? And how would you feel if, now or in the near future, you sent your son or daughter to school which allowed staff and students to carry fire arms?

How about America just makes guns illegal alltogether? I’m from the UK, where guns are not available to buy legally. We have no problems about mass shootings here, although yes we do have an occasional one. I do respect that Americans protect the US constitution and everyhting, but I can see nothing good from having guns available to buy at all. Have you ever seen the documentry Bowling for Columbine? Chances are you have, and it’s blatent from that documentry that having guns available is a pretty stupid idea in the most part. Having guns to protect yourself from others who have guns? That just seems silly to me. Why not get rid of guns altogether?

i think phil is right for the most part, although making guns illegal would not entirely eliminate the threat, and by making them illegal, all those people that hunt for sport would lose their hobby. i dont think it is going to happen any time soon that guns would become illegal in the US.
but why make guns legal at schools? i might understand if officials were legally in possesion of them, but students?come on, that would make shootings a common thing, and the students would likely use them every day just for intimadation, and to try to settle fights with enemys.
no, they should not make guns legal in school, they hould ban them altogether.

people don’t understand that many americans strongly believe in the right to own guns. you’ll notice this if you take even a quick look at the gun poll  www.thegunpoll.com) thegunpoll.com

this site explains it all — americans love guns and the 2nd amendment.

“We have no problems about mass shootings here, although yes we do have an occasional one.”

According to Phil’s”Logic” from the UK, I shouldn’t have to wear my seatbelt in my car, or a helmet on my motorbike, because car accidents only happen “Occasionaly”, so why bother with the SAFETY measures. Heck I’ll just tell my boss at work today that I won’t be wearing my safety glasses anymore either, How well do you think that will go over?

The Truth is that here in America, Self Defense is a GOD Given RIGHT affirmed by the Bill of Rights. Unlike the State and Federal Laws mentioned above, Americans have the option to exercise or not, their Right to Self Defense.

The trouble is that Americans have become Fat, Dumb, and Lazy, and will rely on anybody but themselves for their security. They will also wholeheartedly agree with the “Experts” in government who tell them that the Police arriving 10 Minutes AFTER a crime has occured, is sufficient security for all Americans, and that no one needs guns to protect themselves.

I have a few friends who are Policemen, and they will tell you that they do the best job they can, but 80% of the time they are just there to Mop up the mess left by the criminal.

One of my cop friends told me there is some brutal honesty in one of 50cent’s songs… “You Can Be A Victim, Or You Can Lock And Load”. I choose to Lock And Load, it is MY choice and no one should try to get between me and my rights.

Good Night And Good Luck!

Making it illegal to carry guns won’t stop the criminal, it will only stop the law abiding owner

So were is the logic?

Many more people are killed each day on the roads by car drivers, (who are legal) than ever were by people wielding guns INCLUDING WARS!

COME ON. GET A PROPER PERSPECTIVE

I use to carry a 9MM in my car when I was a student at the Univ. of New Orleans. Now even then guns were illegal to bring on campus but I also knew that my car is considered an extension of my home and I was prepared to challenge that in court if it ever became neccesary. While I was there a string of armed robberies started happening after night classes outside of the engineering building. A good friend of mine used some connections he had to get deputized and started wearing a .45 on his person, in an underam holster, to class. This was a violation of state law and university policy, hence the need to be deputized, but it was a better alternative than possibly being shot during an armed robbery.
This issue has become a hot topic here in Louisiana and New Orleans in particular. The murder rate in our city is very high, in fact, one of the highest in the country. You simply cannot rely on the police to keep you safe. As the law is currently even police are not allowed to carry their weapons with them to class in our universities.
I’ve seen the arguments for and against the issue and my view is that it should be allowed and if it isn’t I would violate the law and do it anyway.
The campus police often say that they have a 3 minute response time. You can kill a lot of people in 3 minutes. I also believe that many of these cowards who go on these killing sprees on college campuses do so knowing that they will meet with little or no opposition from the student body. If there was a chance someone was carrying they might be less likely to carry out these attacks.

I can’t argue with Vice about anything. I would like to add to the “Bowling for Columbine” comment and a few other things. Please tell me there aren’t that many out there that believe Moore’s tripe. There were so many half-truths and blatent lies in the movie it shouldn’t be called a documentary. The truth is that where these type of laws are inacted, ie state concealed carry laws, crime goes down. The bill is for college campus’, not for primary schools. The fact the permit holder needs to be 21 would eliminate most of the under-class and cut down on the number immediately. This would also be a deterrent/defense for much more common assaults and rapes. There isn’t the wild west now and it won’t happen on the college campus’. This isn’t just about Virgina Tech, its more about the daily attacks on humanity. As far as some losing their “hobby”, a lot of people make their living from hunting. That isn’t the point though. The 2nd amendment was designed to protect the people from a tyrannical government and that was further reinforced by the supreme court decision just last year with its well written decision.

[...] Should guns be allowed on college campuses? [...]

Although I’m in the UK, I’d say a definite ‘Yes!’ All banning guns does, is protect the guilty. I don’t know where Phil (above) is, in the UK, but I’m in S E London, where there’s been lots of gang-related shootings. Guns don’t kill people - people kill people!

If it ever came to the worst, as far as my or my family’s safety is concerned, ‘I would soon be tried by twelve than carried by six’.

‘Bill’ mentions above - “The 2nd amendment was designed to protect the people from a tyrannical government and that was further reinforced by the supreme court decision just last year with its well written decision.” - I believe that’s why the new present government wants to get rid of guns across the nation, THEY don’t feel safe with an armed citizenry walking around.

Why is it that gun enthusiasts choose to remember only the latter portion of the 2nd amendment? It reads:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Outlaw guns and only criminals who have guns will be able to protect themselves aginst criminals who have guns. If a person can’t legally protect themself with a gun then they in all probability will be just another dead victim of an encounter with a gun wielding criminal.

This is wonderful! I hope all other states take Texas’ example and put it into practice in their own legislature! I will be sure to find a way to support the brave men who are pushing this bill forward!

I’m continually saddened by the madness surrounding America’s desire to have guns in every hand. I don’t buy the argument about criminals being better armed — aren’t they already, for crying out loud? If we used the example of the U.K., we’d be in better shape, not unscathed, but better. But we ignore the example because of our stupid pride. I am and will always be anti-gun, but for a reason that people rarely notice having to do with guns: Suicide.

My brother died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound 31 years ago tomorrow because of a gun that was too easily available to him during a troubled time; while my inclination was always anti-weapon before he died, that set my belief for the rest of my life, clearly.

Teenagers, guns, and emotions simply don’t mix, whether a gun is used on others, or on themselves, and sadly, sometimes both. I pity people who think otherwise and feel heightened concern for this country’s future at the same time because of the relentlessness of people who think that Armed is the Answer.

To Liz; I am very sorry for your loss, but know this:my son-in-law comitted suicide in 2005 by hanging himself. Should I then be against all ROPE? The problem is with the indiviidual, not the method. People need a method of self-defense that anyone can use and can have access to. Witness Washington DC’s complte ban on any gun and the worst crime and murder record in recent years.

I remember a bumper sticker from when I went to school (back in the ’60s): When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws will have Guns.

Not having a gun on campus is like not having a gun in NYC, you are at the mercy of every thug that gets his/her hands on one.

If guns are outlawed, we can give up the slogan “Land of the Free, Home of the Brave”.

Hey Phil,

Did someone put a gun to your head and force you to move to the US?. I didn’t think so. For those of you who don’t like guns, just don’t buy or use them. Remain ignorant, revel in your victim-hood, it’s also your right. I have to wonder how many people who call themselves “anti-gun” have ever taken any gun safety courses, marksmanship courses, or even shot, let alone held a gun?

Guns are neither good nor evil, they are inanimate objects. They can be used effectively as murder weapons, or paperweights. Depends on the individual’s desire.

And “vice” God Bless You, you are a great American. I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Phil is a Brit and an idiot.
Generating laws upon paper does not insure that everyone will abide by the laws. That shouldn’t be terribly difficult to understand. In fact, you can probably site a few examples of this that you have seen today.
People exceed set speed limits, throw litter on the streets, skateboard at malls and shopping centers and do a plethora of things while knowing these things are illegal.
How do you figure that outlawing guns entirely will have a different effect?
Is not repeating an action and expecting a different result the definition of insanity (or maybe it was stupidity)?

Read this carefully, please. It is the signature I often use in Email and it is, in my country, the truth.
“When your government succeeds in outlawing all the guns, only outlaws and governments will have the guns”.

But Phil is a Brit. He and his like have already sold out and allowed their right “to keep and bear” to be taken from them. The result? Only the outlaws and government in Britain have the guns.

Get the picture?

i disagree with phil entirely. He lives in the UK thats cool but here in the United States those of us that have studied history know that the only way to protect the liberty of the people is to make sure the people are armed. in the UK they still have a MONARCHY!!!!!!! that goes against everything the United States are supposed to stand for. lets not forget what works in the UK will not work in the United States. We fought a war against them in the 1700s for just that reason i believe. the reason we fought that war was because our rights were being threatened by a tyrant 3000 miles away. guns are a critical part of the american culture. its how we protected ourselves when we were expanding towards the west. its how the original settlers defended themselves from the hostile indian tribes. its how america was born.

What Do You Think?
