Data Breach at the University of Florida

There was a security breach at the University of Florida. Files of over 97,000 people were compromised:

“…The files included the names and Social Security numbers of students, faculty and staff who used the “Grove” computer system between 1996 and 2009.”

It is certainly a legitimate question to ask why data files from computer users from over a decade ago were not archived and stored. If the University of Florida follows standard protocol and offers identity theft protection, it would cost approximately ten dollars per person for just one year. It becomes an expensive security breach.

If you know of any staff member or student who attended the University of Florida from 1996 to 2009, you might let them know that there personal information may be used for identity theft. They need to take preventative measures, even at this late date, and to contact the university.
