More People Food and Pet Treats Added to the Peanut Butter Recall

The concern over salmonella has added an increasing number of food products for humans and treats for pets to the recall list:

“…A salmonella outbreak tied to products made by the Peanut Corporation of America has sickened at least 486 people in 43 states. Six deaths may be associated with the outbreak.

The latest recalled type of food is peanut-flavor pet treats. Though dogs and cats can get salmonella from eating the treats, the biggest risk is to their owners, says Stephen Sundlof, head of the FDA’s food safety program. People can pick up the bacteria on their hands and transfer it to their own food.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted answers to common questions about salmonella. The prime prevention with this present salmonella concern is to eliminate products containing peanut butter or peanut butter paste. And prior to handling food and after handling food, the one consistent recommendation is hand-washing with soap.
