President-elect Barack Obama is considering a former classmate, Julius Genachowski, to be the next head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC):
“…Obama’s pick for the nation’s head telecommunications regulator has served as the president-elect’s chief technology counsel and was classmates with Obama at Harvard Law School. Genachowski is credited for spearheading Obama’s online campaign strategy, which used social networking and other tools to spread Obama’s campaign message and raise record campaign contributions.”

Why this selection may be of particular interest to the internet community is that Julius Genachowski has been a supporter of net neutrality. This is the principle that the internet should operate without interference from service providers (ISP). That would preventing the ISP from throttling download speeds or identifying traffic for certain tiers of speed.
Another position that Mr Genachowski has advocated is available and affordable broadband. The appointment of Julius Genachowski may impact internet regulations for every American online.
