The Danger of the Dog’s Squeaky Toy

Many dogs enjoy playing with their squeaky toys. These are the toys that make a sound when squeezed or gnawed. Dogs seem fascinated with the sounds and being able to chew these toys.

Nevertheless, dog owners should be aware of a danger.

In order for the toy to make the noise, usually there is a small metallic reed. When air is forced through the reed, a squeaking noise is made. The reed is what presents the danger. Some dogs can destroy a chew toy in a matter of minutes. Then, the exposure to the sharp reed is a health hazard.

If you allow your dog to have a squeak toy, please do so when you are there to supervise. When there is any signs of the toy being destroyed through the chewing, throw it away. Some people prefer to save these squeaky toys and use them only as a training aid. When you buy these squeak toys, check to be certain that they are well made and can withstand the force of your dog’s enthusiastic chewing. Saving a few cents on a poorly made toy is simply not worth it.
