Teachers Face Job Loss

It is a small news item that may seem typical of the economic climate. Thousands of Los Angeles teachers face the possibility of a job loss:
“…He said at least 2,000 untenured teachers who are on probation or lack certification could lose their jobs if the Legislature can’t find more funds. Administrators could also be laid off or reassigned to schools and classrooms.
The district’s education board will consider Cortines’ request to send layoff notices at its meeting Jan. 13. The layoffs could begin in March.”

The layoffs may resolve the immediate budget deficit. However, there are long term consequences. The quality of the education will be felt immediately and in the long term. The students will be less prepared to continue with their education and that has long term implications. There is no indication when such a large number of teachers will be replaced.

Very typical.
Here in Florida, to fix the almost 3 billion dollar whole in revenue, they are going to short the school districts here $95 per student. And that K-12. The universities are going to be hit even harder. And there is talk about suspending the Bright Futures scholarship program, in which case my son then discovers that he’ll have to be working for dollars for school, not just dollars to be consumed.
