A recent infant death in China has initiated another investigation of melamine contamination in milk products:
“An investigation is under way in China after a two-month-old baby boy in Jiangsu died soon after being fed baby milk powder for the first time.
The milk powder was produced after strict controls were introduced following last year’s melamine scandal.”

The number of fatalities listed by the Chinese government may be questioned. With the Chinese emphasis of presenting well for the international community, the validity of these data is suspect. Furthermore, there are no longitudinal studies of the impact on the health of the children who were exposed to the contaminated milk products. The initial reports indicate that thousands of infants were ill from consuming the tainted milk.
