The Friday Layoffs

Another Friday pay day and, unfortunately, another friend has received a layoff notice. With large companies like Yahoo, there is some warning. The publicity in the press alerts employees that their positions in the company may terminated soon.

With smaller companies, the moves are often much swifter. The layoffs for many come without advance publicity. Sometimes there are only rumors. - It seems that it would be kinder to do this on a Monday and allow the worker to be able to do ’something’ on the next business day. When it happens on a Friday, it must be a horrid weekend, especially at this time of the year.

If you know people who received the dreaded ‘Friday notice’, please stay in touch with them. It may seem basic but we need to support each other through this. With the stress and depression, it is so important that we look after the people we know.

I couldn’t agree more. One of the hardest parts of losing a job is losing touch with people you spend an amazing amount of time with on a daily basis. You begin to feel like a solo player who is no longer part of a team that he loved (at least on some level).

Being a consultant, I fully understand being “laid-off”, because it happens at the end of each assignment. You have to keep my head up, and know that you will find a new position, and a new situation where you will meet new people.
